Great player, he probably would have enjoyed 2015 Cubs, at least their best team since 2008

RIP

A shame that this putrid last season of Cubs baseball was the final one he saw.

Many, many fond memories growing up in the late 60’s watching him play out his career. Only wish I could have seen him play shortstop in his prime. My memories are of him guarding first base.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Cub.

Ernie Banks was my boyhood hero. He came to the Cubs in 1953, the year I was born. I lived a couple miles from Wrigley Field and saw him play hundreds of times.

Game Called. Across the field of play
the dusk has come, the hour is late.
The fight is done and lost or won,
the player files out through the gate.
The tumult dies, the cheer is hushed,
the stands are bare, the park is still.
But through the night there shines the light,
home beyond the silent hill.

Game Called. Where in the golden light
the bugle rolled the reveille.
The shadows creep where night falls deep,
and taps has called the end of play.
The game is done, the score is in,
the final cheer and jeer have passed.
But in the night, beyond the fight,
the player finds his rest at last.

Game Called. Upon the field of life
the darkness gathers far and wide,
the dream is done, the score is spun
that stands forever in the guide.
Nor victory, nor yet defeat
is chalked against the players name.
But down the roll, the final scroll,
shows only how he played the game.

-Grantland Rice

RIP Ernie!

I was too little for the first half of his career, but for the second half of his career, I saw most of the games he played, hundreds in person and hundreds more on Channel 9. Got to meet Ernie Banks a number of times. He and the Cubs and Wrigley Field were a big part of my youth.

President Obama gave Ernie Banks Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House and will mention him since he’s a legend in Chicago, don’t blame the President on that one.

For the vile leftists who drop in to Free Republic looking for even a scintilla of racism from the Conservative Patriots who comprise the FReeper community, you're sorely disappointed -- again -- by this thread. The reality is that liberals were, are and will always be the real racists and Conservatives are color blind. The rightful praise on Ernie Banks, Mr. Cub, found in the numerous posts here are proof positive that the achievements of the individual are what's valued -- not the tint of one's complexion. FReepers are honest and plain spoken, calling out thugs when warranted regardless of skin color and honoring good mean, also regardless of a superficial thing such as the melanin count.

It's threads such as these that make me humbly proud to be a part of FReepdom.

Very sad. I don’t remember much from when I was a little shaver, but I do remember when my dad was stationed at Great Lakes, he would take me to Wrigley and we would watch Mr. Cub hit homers while we ate Good n Plentys. I was about 4 or 5, so that was in 69-70. One of my fondest memories and the reason I love baseball. I love you, dad.

RIP Mr. Cub... I thank you for the joy you gave to me when I was a boy. Your love of the game, and your skills on the diamond brought great happiness to all who love the game.

“It is a great day for a ball game... Let’s play two!!!”
