Those ubiquitous black holes that bend wheel rims, flatten tires and cause vehicle alignments to go out of whack seem to be appearing out of nowhere.
Potholes are indiscriminate, said Charles Metzger, PennDOTs community relations coordinator. They pop up wherever they feel like.
Late winter into early spring is prime pothole season. The days are getting warmer, causing any accumulated snow to melt and water to run into cracks in the roadway. At night, when the temperature drops, the water freezes and pushes up and out, creating a depression in the asphalt.
Traffic drives over it and thats how a pothole is born, Metzger said.

Welcome to the north country.
You’d think that glowBULL warming would heat that asphalt back into the hole.
"..I hit one last week that was so deep, when I yelled down it the echo came back in a foreign language"
Here in the NE they are insane this year plus the frost heaves are like Moguls
The one I hit was so deep my ears popped on the way down and again when I climbed back up.
I’m hiring a sherpa for my next trip to the store.
..a new wrinkle this year is the rolling effect the extreme gold had on some roads....
gold=cold
One good thing about Illinois. Horrible roads are not a seasonal thing.
Most of the roads in my town look like they’ve been shelled by Kraut artillery.
This is the time of year when you can easily determine the border between the city and Montgomery County. On the county side, the potholes are patched within a couple weeks. On the city side, they’ll get around to it by the summer, or maybe later. The end result of a city government that spends its money on anything and everything other than basic services like roads.
In Pennsylvania, there are only two seasons: winter and road repair.
Every pothole represents a lexus, private school, or retirement fund payment to a government cubicle warmer. The amount of money shelled out in the form of various taxes and fees could have paved every road with mother of pearl with gold inlay.
Well most of the roads here in my town of Martinez, CA are treated like a dental filling only. A patch here and there. New potholes are created until it gets really deep that is when they come and fill it up.
Not just in the north. Houston now has a pothole watch going on. Street department has fixed 2000 potholes in the last three weeks or so. Probably three times that remaining. Guy who runs that department had no idea there were so many or why they weren’t being repaired. Just amazing.
Everytime I have to drive up there I have to get my car aligned and tires balanced when I return. Watching them work is rather like watching the Keystone Cops. Don’t expect their repairs to last long.
It’d be nice if they at least gave you novocaine!
Yea, it’s pretty funny. As soon as you cross the border into OK, all you hit are potholes. Texas roads around here are decent, but OK doesn’t do anything on their side. Unless it’s the main highways running to the casinos. Those are pretty decent, of course!
Potholes!!!??
I know the right man for the job...
