A Civil War-era Medal of Honor recipient forgotten in an unmarked grave for nearly a century finally got a funeral Thursday when he was given full military honors and reburied at a national cemetery.
The Army gave Sgt. Charles Schroeter a rifle salute and a bugler played taps on the cloudy morning at Miramar National Cemetery. Scores of veterans from past wars ranging from Vietnam to Afghanistan attended the ceremony. Some dressed in uniforms and dresses from the Civil War era. Among the crowd were two Medal of Honor recipients.
Schroeter was found thanks to efforts to locate all those awarded the nation's highest military award.
"On behalf of a grateful nation, may you find this new place of rest to be the home of honor you rightfully deserve," Army Brig. Gen. Joseph M. Martin told the crowd.

He’s very lucky he was U.S. Army ,they may dig him up
According to the “new history”, they need to dig his racist body up and........well, do something with it rather than desecrate sacred ground.
Oh. Union. Just like my kin folk from upstate NY. Anyway, when will it be revealed that the actual reason for the war between the states was because those sneaky northerners wanted the slaves for themselves?
“The German-born U.S. soldier was given the Medal of Honor in 1869 for his gallantry during battles between settlers and Native Americans out West.”
All Confederate war dead are legally considered to be US soldiers.
He was among the members of the 1st and 8th Cavalry, under the commands of Lieutenant William H. Winters and Captain Reuben Bernard, who pursued an Apache raiding party led by Cochise that had massacred a stage coach en route to Tucson and attacked a group of cowboys in the Sulphur Springs Valley on October 5, 1868. The cavalry detachment pursued the Apache to Cochises stronghold in the Chiricahua Mountains where they did battle on October 20, 1869.
Tell that to the Memphis Mayor and City Council who plan to dig up Confederate General N.B. Forrest.
1868 is now Civil War era? Does that mean the Obama era will last until 2020?
Besides, why are they honoring a white European interloper for exploiting Native Americans? Maybe the sergeant was an illegal immigrant - that would fix everything.
Excellent links. I have been on the SCV site many times, and not seen that level of detail. Thanks.
Actually I want to thank so many FReepers for their words to honor a man who won this country’s highest medal and who was finally laid to rest with the respect and reverence that he deserved.
It should also be noted that The sons of union civil war veterans officially honor and support the display of the confederate battle flag.
> Hes very lucky he was U.S. Army ,they may dig him up
Did you ever wonder what happened to the dead after the Battle of Gettysburg? The fallen Union troops were gathered up and shipped to their families. The fallen Confederates were gather up, taken to the town dump and burned.
