LOL That came to my mind. Clift Robertson in “A Hundred Yards Over The Rim”.

From the first account, I think the tree had grown partially around it. They were pretty confident it had been there the entire time.

Great Basin NP, near Ely is way out there. Unattended objects may not be discovered. The ranger there gave us a private tour since we were the only visitors.

The highway there can have no vehicles for hours. We pulled over to relieve ourselves openly without privacy concerns.

Your right, it is amazing how it still holds today. Rod Steiger was way ahead of his time. Moral of those stories never changes thru time.

I’ve been saying this since it was first found.... The rifle was probably placed against the tree in relatively modern times. If it had been leaning against the tree for 100+ years there would have been substantial interaction with the bark growth and there is no trace of that. My theory is that the rifle was found by someone in a more likely place, like at the bottom of a cliff or down a ravine where it was first dropped. Someone (who doesn’t know much about firearms) picked it up, possibly carried it some distance, placed it against the tree, and continued on their way — probably within the five years preceding its discovery.

Or maybe a time traveler?

There were so many great episodes, it’s impossible to choose a favorite. But I like ‘The Night of the Meek’ with Art Carney; and ‘Little Girl Lost’ with its great line, “Bill’s coming over; he’s a physicist”.

Cliff Robertson had come and gone in time before that rifle so rule him out.

Captain Jack Harkness might have been dealing with an alien threat in the old west, got blasted to bits or something and left it behind.

Well the owner could be the following:

1) Alien
2) Someone who is currently 130 years old
3) A Time Traveler
4) Someone traveling on a horse and buggy
5) Someone who had a very bad boating accident

The one that gives me the creeps is The Mask, where the father had his family wear the mask until midnight. They were a greedy bunch. Also the one with Ida Lupino an aged starlet, her desire was so strong to return to her glorious Hollywood years that she went back but in the film.

Interesting Ida Lupino also directed The Mask.

My all time favorite - THE OBSOLETE MAN about the future of a totalitarian society

Or one 130 year old alien time traveler crossing the West in a horse-drawn boat.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

One would think if the rifle were left against the juniper tree many decades ago, the tree would grow around it and encase it.

Good one. Maybe Marty McFly and Doc Brown went back in time, bought the rifle and left it there as a practical joke to see how people would react in the future when it was found.

Why does it matter so much? So someone left a rifle against a tree. I’m aure there are more laying around.

In a Twilight Zone episode the rifle would be an Ar-15 that was left in the desert 150 years ago.

Imagine that AR-15 suddenly appearing with a bucket full of loaded magazines 150 years ago on a Civil War battlefield...

"Gonna postpone that meeting at Appomattox..."

Have they checked the tree to see if the owner may be encased in it?

Nobody so far has mentioned Howard Hughes.
