The life of a rancher in the Texas Panhandle isn't an easy one. It's even harder in a family turned against itself. Hud Bannon (Paul Newman) is an ambitious, self-centered, and unscrupulous young man, always in conflict with his principled and honest, if somewhat in decline, father (Melvyn Douglas). Nephew and grandson Lon (Brandon De Wilde) is torn in his loyalties between the two. When a mysterious sickness befalls the cattle herd, tensions are pushed beyond their limits.
Co-starring Patricia Neal...

The thing I take away most from this film, though, is the ruggedness of the lifestyle these folks lead, and the heartbreak that is often part and parcel of working the land. 8/10.
Isn’t it still Thursday night?
Yes - I’m posting a day early because I’m going out of town. I mentioned it on the other film I posted, but didn’t think to do it on my “double feature” My bad!
Paul Newman double feature ping.
Hud spelled backwards is Duh....
Paul Newman sucks even in death. Wealthy hypocrite race car liberal. Screw him.
Typical Hollywood lecturing creep. Bleaghhhhh.
Oh ok. There for a minute I thought, oh no, I’ve lost an entire day. LOL.
From one of the great Larry McMurtry books.
Thanks, as always, Demforbush.
Have a good trip.
HUD was filmed near Amarillo, where I lived. In the opening scene, a grocer is shown sweeping shattered glass off the sidewalk in front of his store. Someone asks him what happened, and he said, “I had Hud last night.”
The grocer was played by Warren Anderson, a celebrity on the local CBS tv affiliate. He and his family lived two houses down from us, and we knew them well.
I’ve often wondered what sort of career Brandon De Wilde (Lon) would have had if he had not died so young (fatal car accident at 30, IIRC). He held his own in Hud, which is no easy feat given the talent of the leads.
Really? That’s pretty neat! It’s a great line in the movie, too. “I had Hud last night” really sets up what a wild one Newman’s character was.
Thank you!
Warren Anderson played a character he called The Plainsman for a kiddy show on KFDA. His sidekick on the show, whose name I can’t remember, was also a teacher at Horace Mann Junior High for a while. I had a class from him in mechanical drawing. He was a funny dude.
I don’t know about that. Newman was a Hollywood lib but he seemed to put his money where his mouth was. His charity gives 100% of the profits to causes that mainly focus on Poor and terminally ill children. Some are church based. Over $400mm so far.
Maybe his politics sucked but he was a great actor and a great humanitarian.
I’m happy to disagree, politically, like that and still respect all the good he’s done.
Excellent movie!
Thank you X2!
