Microsoft is using a new tactic to keep Windows 10 users from switching away from its Edge browser. The first time Edge users search for “chrome” or “firefox” using Bing — presumably with the intent of downloading those browsers from Google or Mozilla, respectively — they are shown a serious-looking message at the top of the search results.
“Microsoft recommends Microsoft Edge for Windows 10,” it says. A “Learn why” button next to that message brings you to a website showing off Edge’s features...
The message only showed up the first time I searched for “chrome” and “firefox” in Edge, as I was just starting to get comfortable on the new Acer Aspire One Cloudbook 11. Subsequent searches for those terms did not trigger the message. Neither did “opera,” which is another non-Microsoft browser. It’s not clear how widely deployed this message is; I’m in the U.S., but it’s possible that the message isn’t showing up in other countries.
“Microsoft Edge was designed exclusively for Windows 10 with features and functionality that enhance the browsing experience such as Cortana, Web Note, and Quick answers,” a Microsoft spokeswoman told VentureBeat in an email. “These notifications were created to provide people with quick, easy information that can help them get to know these experiences better. That said, with Windows 10 you can easily choose the default browser and search engine of your choice.”

OTOH, I'm a devoted Firefox fan BECAUSE IT'S PORTABLE across Windows, Mac, and Linux. I need that. I can never use Edge because it's only available on Windows.
I'd love to see MS port Edge to the other OSes. But hell will freeze over first.

I hate Bing, have done everything possible to keep it off my ‘puter. Now Microass wants to keep me from my Firefox ... the war is on.
I don’t care for Edge and don’t use it. I have a cached copy of Pale Moon so I don’t need a browser to find a browser. The more I use Win-10 the less I like it.
1. I don’t use Bing.
2. I had no difficulty installing Firefox and Seamonkey.
Sounds like the bad old days of “Microsoft reminds you that the browser IS part of the operationg system” and made it damn near impossible to get rid of it.
Refuse to use a MS browser, always will. If they are trying to pull this crap, will just stay with Win 7 that much longer.
I use Bing and it seems okay except for one annoyance. When searching for a Youtube video it gives Bing video results. I either have to go to google or youtube to get a link to a youtube video.
Fix: Use Google search to find Chrome or Firefox for Windows 10. ;-)
Haven’t had that on my installation of W 10, downloaded and installed Chrome with no problem. However it’s rarely used. Egde is fast and clean. It works great for me as does Cortana.
In fact before Edge Comodo Dragon was my browser of choice but Edge is better.
Bing is also my goto search engine because of the results are usually more what I want.
I do use Google maps and EarthPro but Bing maps often gives seasonal views as you rotated.
Don’t get me wrong. I would have been ok with Bing except for the fact they kept trying to “force” me to accept it. Not to mention that every time I tried using another search engine, my search was forced onto Bing.
These parameters might have changed over the years, but once burned, twice shy.

Nothing new. bing always did this.
I just found out recently that you can’t even run the Edge browser with UAC turned off. Most power users turn off UAC within a few seconds of their first boot.

Since I have been on Win10 Chrome keeps freezing with java script enabled
I don’t have direct evidence, but I would bet that Microsoft ports Edge to other operating systems eventually. I doubt there will be much in the way of adoption, but I’d bet it happens. Why? Well, Microsoft is finally getting on board with new features on the server side such as SSH. They want more adoption, not less, so I’d imagine they’ll make that leap. It doesn’t cost them anything other than packaging the product to be platform agnostic, and since Edge is HTML5 compliant, I’d imagine they’re more than halfway there.

I kept the profile folder (right click at top of Firefox window and hit Menu bar, and then hit Help>Troubleshooting.. and then Show Folder) on a separate partition both Windows and Linux can access. Then after FF is installed in Windows I copy the shortcut from the Start Menu to the desktop, then r. clk on it and hit properties, and change it to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -no-remote -p
Leave out the (x86) and space before it for 32 bit systems. Then i choses to create folder, and choose folder, that being where my profile folders are. More instructions here . Firefox can be downloaded here .
In Linux Ubuntu, Firefox program should be in /usr/lib/firefox Profile should be in /home/your-user-name/.mozilla/firefox,
The political correctness of the Mozilla org however is bad coding, but you can use Pale Moon (a derivative) or Waterfox (for 64 bit systems)
Edge, nor Chrome, can approach the capabilities of Firefox and derivative that its extensions work with for the "power user."
