NEWPORT BEACH - The sighting of an 8-foot hammerhead shark off the Newport Beach pier led lifeguards to close nearby beaches Monday.
Lifeguards were alerted to the shark around 11 a.m. near the end of the pier, according to Jennifer Manzella of the Newport Beach Police Department.

It didn’t have a laser beam device attached to its forehead by any chance, did it?
Schools are next.
If they closed NC beaches due to sighting a hammerhead off the end of a fishing pier, they’d never open.
One lesson to derive, though, is to do your ocean swimming well away from fishing piers. The water is full of bait, that draws bait fish, that draw sharks.
If there was a big south I bet guys would still be going out. It must be flat.
Weak. I’m not one of those tough guy know it alls but never had an issue with a Hammerhead. I’ve seen them swimming, diving, and a few times while capsized sailing.
Hammers aren’t really known for agressiveness towards swimmers. We’ve had a ton of GWS juveniles at Bolsa Chica all summer due to a massive stingray population and no one got bit.
I think the bigger story is that hammerheads aren’t known to be in our waters - it’s he warm El Niño conditions (74F surface water temps ) that have been bringing in Sea of Cortez type animals the last two years
They are freaky looking, but as someone mentioned upthread, there are worse threats to surfers and swimmers among shark species than a hammerhead. They’re really not know to attack humans all that often.
Not true. I've seen 10 footers fishing off barn kelp in San Clemente. El Nino is happening though. Last summer we were catching dorado off Oceanside. Even wahoo off san diego were reported.
If hammerheads didn’t exist, no one coukd envision such an odd looking shark.
Spear it and make steaks
Eyeballs mounted on a canard wing? Probably pretty efficient and stable in certain maneuvers.

For what it’s worth, my son, while sailing, saw a small (baby?) hammerhead this Sunday inside the breakwater at King Harbor, Redondo Beach. He said it was about 5 feet long, near the surface with dorsal fin out of the water.
Don't get mad , it's just the way it is
