Insulated chamber, other prison-like features found in New Orleans home where Kenner kidnap victim was held
A terrified woman found running for her life at a busy Mid-City intersection Friday morning (Nov. 6) led authorities to uncover a frightening web of prison-like features hidden inside a North Lopez Street home where she was held.
The home had hidden compartments, false doors and cameras behind two-way mirrors, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation. Loose tiles under a bed led investigators to a small, insulated chamber that appeared equipped for restraints, the source said.
Authorities also found a number of videotapes and DVDs, the contents of which were unknown. The source, who was not authorized to discuss the probe publicly, spoke anonymously.
Mario Perez-Roque, the 56-year-old man suspected of living in the double shotgun home's rear apartment, was captured late Friday night in Metairie by members of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force. He was being held without bond, Kenner police said, booked with simple kidnapping and as a fugitive from New Orleans.
Police believe a 36-year-old Kenner woman escaped from Perez-Roque's apartment near Canal Street on Friday, after being abducted from her home on Martinique Avenue. She had once worked for him, said Kenner Police Department spokesman Lt. Brian McGregor, and had previously rebuffed his attempt to begin a romantic relationship with her.
