So I am in no mans land here, I am looking for a hand gun for my daughter for concealed carry. I have not bought one for someone else before however we have been to the range many times and she has handled many firearms over the years. I am a stickler when it comes to, "if it's not comfortable in your hand, you will never shoot it right" philosophy. However, I have big huge man hands so all of them are fit for me, and her hands are a lot smaller. For expert opinion, let me describe her.
5'6" On a scale of 1-10 (1=anorexia, 10=morbidly obese) she is a 3 or a 4. Small hands. Doesn't carry a purse, so the flashbang holster would be perfect, plus she is busty so that makes it easier to conceal. She is also Left handed like me. Plus she is halfway across the country so we can't do a "comfort with the grip" thing. Also this is a Christmas Present.
Any opinions would be appreciated.
bkmk
Ruger has a 9mm with laser built-in. LC9. I think they even have pink, though that should be outlawed, LOL.
She needs to go to local gun store, preferably with range, and try several to pick what “fits” and is comfortable to shoot. Any thing less is a guess and one guess is as good as another......
Ruger .380. Perfect for a woman. My wife has one.
I’m not going to give very specific advice, but by far the best thing would be for her to shoot several possibilities and choose the one that works best for her. There are a lot of parameters, including concealability/comfort, recoil, and sight picture. Even the choice between a revolver and semi isn’t always clear cut.
There are a lot of great options out there for sure!
They have just released the new series called ‘lady lilac’
My wife has already hinted twice about it as a possible Christmas gift.
Hammer or striker fired?
Looked at the lc9, it is perfect except its set up for right handed only.
I attended an NRA show a few years ago when they had their convention in Milwaukee. There were many firearms on exhibit. There is an enormous difference in the feel to the hand of a woman. As I remember, I liked the Lady Smith & Wesson, but I can’t really remember. Part of the problem is that the “pull” on the triggers is hard for a woman.
My husband bought me a gun, and I shall never use it. It’s too big, too stiff, etc. It’s his. (Which is probably what he intended inthe first place. LOL)
A friend of mine is trying to open an indoor target range in our town. Her first location was turned down, but the city offered 2 other possibilities, and she is pursueing that. She will offer both rifle and hand gun lanes, rental guns, instruction, and a boutiques that will cary different kinds of holsters and accessories, as well as competitive leagues. I think I’ll sign up.
It’s a Christmas present.
5 rules of a gun fight:
1) gun beats no gun
That means two thing. If you didn’t bring it for what ever reason, (too big, prints too easily, dont like the weight, etc) you have no gun. Second, if your gun jams and you don’t know how to clear it, or if you run out of ammo, you have no gun
2) Fast beats slow
The person who can get their gun into the fight and shoots first is usually the one who shoots last.
3) a hit beats a miss
A .22 that hits is worth far more than the .44 mag that misses. Only carry what you can shoot accurately that second follow on shot
4) big holes beat little holes
Given 1,2 and 3 from above, choose the biggest caliber you can that still allows for rules 1 - 3. Also, hollow points help.
5) many holes beat one hole
If it is worth shooting once, shoot twice. Keep this in mind when carrying extra magazines
She needs to go to local gun store, preferably with range, and try several to pick what âfitsâ and is comfortable to shoot. Any thing less is a guess and one guess is as good as another......
Best advice you will find right here.
You're a good Dad!
(defer thoughts on gun to others, I carry Colt 1911)
I would like to hear more of your insight on this.
“Itâs a Christmas present.”
Perhaps a gift card for a convenient gun store + range would work best. :-)
The thing is a carry weapon is a critical and very personal piece of equipment. The person carrying it really needs to be involved in choosing it for the best results IMO - unless you get very lucky.
Just my $.02, best of luck regardless of how you two choose it.
An Airweight 442. She can choose the grip she likes. Anything from big decelerators to boot grips. Load it with Corbon +P 38’s. The gun is easily concealable and foolproof. With no external hammer to snag it draws very fast no matter how you carry it. Being black it hides more easily, and at only 15oz you hardly know it’s there. The kick is easy. I’m small framed and I have no problem/pain controlling/shooting it.
Just my two cents..

Great idea.
