On May 1, Jill Dyche was filming dogs at the Carson Animal Shelter in California when she heard a dog crying. When she found the 9 year old Doberman, she saw that his owner was surrendering him.

Jill captured the Dobie’s heartbreak on video and shared it on Facebook. It soon went viral.

The larger the breed, the shorter the lifespan, is it that simple?

Mom & Dad had a miniature poodle raised as a normal dog, not a spoiled one. Intelligent & loved being around people, she lived fifteen years.

I believe that is a different organization than the “SPCA”, and they are shit.
Something like 96% of donations goes to progressive causes having nothing to do with animals.
They tug at the heart strings of dopey liberals to get donations for their progressive causes. And it works.

I agree. If the dog is in pain and you cannot afford to fix the problem, what do you do? I would not want to put the dog down! I would be HONEST about the dog's medical condition and find an owner who loves Dobermans and has lots of money.

Anyone surrendering their dog because they seek a lifestyle change lacks a soul. I want that dog out of that miserable owner's lives as soon as possible but there's risk such a dog gets put down!

Yup.

Dogs seem to be the inverse of the rule bigger animals usually live longer lives.

Giant breeds like Saint Bernards and Great Danes can live less than a decade.

Medium sized breeds can live up to 15 years.

Small sized breeds can live up to 20 years.

As a general rule that’s correct but there are exceptions that cut both ways.

I think that the dogs vet bills were probably the reason it was taken to the shelter. vets don’t treat animals for free and if you don’t have the money to care for the animal the best thing you can do is take them to a shelter. at least the guy did not take the dog out into a rural area and abandon it. where I live that is common. both my dogs are rescues and that word rescue does not mean free dog.I have a teacup Pomeranian that was abandoned the vet bills was 1500 dollars to get her all healthy, fat and sassy.

You may very well be right. I have never watched it beyond the first few seconds to recognize it and the music; the channel is either changed or I leave the room ... so I honestly don't know which organization is responsible.

Any donations that I make in the area of abandoned pets go directly to our local animal shelter. I won't have anything to do with higher-level "animal protection" organizations.

This dog's story was posted a few weeks ago on FR and people doubted the story. I can verify the story is true and the writer understated the cruelty he got from the original family. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3363548/posts Louie has to downsize from a $3 million home to a $1.5 million one but he won't mind.

My sister had her chihuahua mix mutt (approx. 15 lbs) FOR 23 YEARS AND IT WAS AT LEAST 2-4 YEARS OLD BEFORE SHE TOOK OWNERSHIP OF HER, making the dog at LEAST 25 years old.

I'm not BS'ing here. That dog was the longest lived dog I know of and she died gently and peacefully of natural causes. My sister's other dog lived to be 21 and they have no idea how old he was when they got him.

"I agree ... I can't even watch the ASPCA advertisements on television which show abandoned pets with the song "In the Arms of an Angel"; I have to switch channels or leave the room..."

Same here. I turn those things right off.

People often don’t think about that when they get a pet.

Nearly all of our pets have been rescues. If they happen to get really sick and need medical treatment that is prohibitively expensive, you can at least have some comfort that you gave them many years of love and attention.

Unfortunately, I’m usually the one that ends up taking them to the vet for the last goodbye.

Thanks; I love dogs so much I think very few people are qualified to own them (including myself).

*facepalm*

I’ve been trying to keep from thinking about it...which of course produces the opposite result.

And you have to do the right thing even if it leaves both of you heartbroken.

Dad kept his shepherd for as long as he could as the dog suffered with dysplacia. It was tough hearing Zarek occasionally cry in pain when he tried to get up from a nap. He finally put him down right before the family went north for a July 4 weekend because dad didn't want to risk the chance of one of the little kids getting bitten if they accidentally patted the dog on his hind quarters......

I was tasked with taking him to the vet and it was one of the worst things I've ever had to do in my life.......I'm still sad thinking about it.
