"God Bless America" is an American patriotic song written by Irving Berlin in 1918 and revised by him in 1938. The later version has notably been recorded by Kate Smith, becoming her signature song.[1][2]
"God Bless America" takes the form of a prayer (intro lyrics "as we raise our voices, in a solemn prayer") for God's blessing and peace for the nation ("...stand beside her and guide her through the night...").

“While the storm clouds gather.............”
She sang this shortly before Pearl Harbor.
That was nice. And it was a glimpse of an America that disappeared soon after LBJ became president.
“She sang this shortly before Pearl Harbor.”
Now she could be arrested and ordered by a New York court to be re-educated for singing it today.
Can’t be sung in schools anymore.
Probably.
That’s true. 11-23-63 was a turning point.
I'm 72 and still remember all the words.......but can't remember what I did yesterday...;-)
Not really. This was Nov. 10, 1938.
You’re correct. I was thinking of a performance that was filmed of her singing it in late 1940.
Always preferred “America the Beautiful”.
Our other National Anthem!
If it was called the greatest song ever I wouldn’t argue.
Introduced on an Armistice Day broadcast in 1938 actually, sung by Kate Smith on her radio show....but certainly close enough to Pearl Harbor....America knew what was coming even then.
INTRO-—”While the storm clouds gather far across the sea / Let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free / Let us all be grateful for a land so fair, / As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.”
While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
Let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free.
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer:
God bless America, land that I love,
Stand beside her and guide her
Through the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans white with foam,
God bless America, my home sweet home.
God bless America, my home sweet home.
Thank you. Brings tears to my eyes. It’s from an America I used to know.
It brings tears to my eyes, too.
And Ronald Reagan was in that which is nice.
