what do you think the Church has been doing? And by the way, while no movies are going to be made about this, the public schools have been cleaning up their acts. Far more school teachers molest children than priests do. And until recently, the public schools simply cut the bad teachers loose to find jobs across the country. I was a teacher for more than 40 years and I know that was how the game was played. There are more than 10,000 ISDs in the country, and verify little co-ordination of hiring practices among them, even within the states. Also, much the same was true of the many thousands of unconnected Protestant Churches in the country. Out of sight, out of mind. The Catholic Church was an easier target because of its centralized authority and of course because of the natural loyalty of priests for their kind. The motive of the pubic schools was simply to get rid of bad employees. I must say that a congregationally organized church has this advantage. The local Church could vet candidates thoroughly and were not weighed down by by caste loyalties, at least as much. Clericalism is the underlying cause of the priest scandal.

I have no arguments against this movie . . . everything I’ve heard about it is true to fact . . . even voices from the Catholic Church have said so. It is an ugly stain on the Church, no doubt. But the Church has acted on it and has made numerous changes to better safeguard the kids.

One of the safeguards in place around the world was started right in the Diocese of Dallas and from a parish I attended at the time . . . St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Annual background checks started there right after the Rudy Koss scandal and the Church adopted those guidelines very quickly after seeing the success the Diocese was having.

The Church is also acting swiftly on accusations and removing priests from duty during investigations.

Do they still have more work to do? Of course! Is any church perfect? Of course not. As long as the Church is alive on this earth, there will be attacks from outside and from within.

The proper course for the Catholic Church is not vitriol and circling the wagons. It is to make the people who were harmed whole, and to make sure this can’t happen anymore with humility.

Ditto.

The film was truly excellent, and not anti-Christian; it was anti-corruption, anti-cover-up, anti-media-collusion and anti-child-abuse. It was one of the best films I’ve seen in years on many levels, and did not change my view of Catholicism.
