Crufts viewers criticise 'horrific breeding' of dog voted best German Shepherd

A row has broken out over a German Shepherd bitch who won best of breed at Crufts - after viewers accused the breeder of animal cruelty.

Three-year-old Cruaghaire Catoria was judged to be the best example of her breed at the world-famous dog show on Saturday night.

But the dog was said by some viewers to be 'deformed', with an abnormally sloped back and a painful-looking out-of-step gait.

Anybody who owns a working dog bred from these ‘Beauty Pageant” winners is nuts. Field trial Champions are the only way to go.

While I agree that there are other things that can go wrong, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree that conformation such as this would impact a dog's lifestyle. Like I said my vet agrees, only because they tend to see GSD similar to that and have literally said they prefer dogs of our style.

While we are not talking about wild canines, the point is that nature did not evolve any animal to have an extreme conformation like that with anything else in the "dog" world and I believe there is a reason for this, particularly in a breed that had wolf influence 110 years ago.

I think you’re on the right track. You have some details wrong i.e. inbreeding doesn’t cause health issues. I’m not sure what you mean by disqualifying a breed or what breed is “prone to blindness”. I do know that some breeds have color varieties that carry problem recessive genes. Collie people for instance don’t cross two merles together but it’s safe to cross a merle with a sable. People who buy puppies need to do health research before buying and insist on only buying from mature and certified healthy dogs.. Buyer and seller have a responsibility. If this happened there would be a lot fewer health problems.

Those dogs walk like my Brittany did after she got ran over and broke her back.

Humans are such bad stewards with things.

I prefer the Shepherds that I saw in Germany with the straighter backs. They didn’t have as great a tendency for hip dysplasia.

I’ve had great luck with my mixed breed rescue dogs. I’ve got six now and have fostered around 90. When people ask me what breed they are I tell them, “That’s a pure blooded Harley/Dasher/Bandit...”

Agree.
I like your description of dog shows, Beauty Pageants.
The Commander of the local Sheriff’s Dept. K9 unit spoke at our neighborhood watch a few years back. At that point he was just finishing the training of his new dog. A Belgian Shepherd, ( Shepherd because I can’t spell Malinois) obtained from Europe. He told us, they could no longer trust getting what they wanted from American breeders. So they go to a training facility that gets their dogs from breeders in Europe. Eastern Europe I think.

OMG.

I bailed after about 10 seconds.

That was too horrible to watch.

You will appreciate this, I’m sure.

Crap like this is why I switched to European Dobermanns.

They have managed to stay closer to the correct conformation.

Crufts is under fire for the Best in Breed Cavalier too. Breeding protocol is that they not be bred under age 2. This is a attempt to improve the health of Cavaliers, who are prone to a couple of nasty hereditary conditions, Mital Valve Disease and Syringamyelia. The dog who won had been bred at 9 months of age. Crufts claims they support ethical breeding and healthy dogs, but I think it is apparent the claim is false.

Our Golden is from hunting not beauty show breeding.

In Europe, *no* Dobermann litter can be bred unless at *least* one of the parents holds working titles.

Odd bit of trivia: My childhood Wonder Dobe not only had conformation champions in his pedigree, his grandfather was a Field Champion.

My Wonder Dobe could point birds like a dream, with no training at all.

How crazy is that?

Sounds like your vet really likes your dogs! Vets are hit or miss on what they really know about dogs as populations. There is one vet in our metro area who’s really knowledgeable about dogs.

“that had wolf influence 110 years ago.”
Wait what? GSDs crossed with wolves 110 years ago? I’ve not seen a study that says that. Do you have a link?

There is a bit of happy news from Crufts.

This Podengo was rescued from the alleys of Spain, pregnant, starving and mangy.

Look at her now, with her obedience/agility trophy:

There seems to be an exaggeration of the crouch position in forward movement in this dogs

My little brother has a GSD pup from a fancy kennel in Michigan I’ll have to see how they look

I’m a Rott guy now

The breeding on them leans toward size and blacker faces in past 40 years

No question

Beverly Farmer is the Angel Of The Podencos.

She rescues incredible amounts of dogs from the streets, fixes them up and finds them homes.

Many are living here, in the US, including the above dog’s son, Roody, now a pet of my best friend, Nan.

She’s also on Facebook, though some of the images of the newly rescued dogs are often quite painful to see.

That’s really neat.

Your article made the comment that they range in size, leading me to think there are many different kinds.

They use them to hunt boar!

Podencos are all over the place, in size.

There are Podenco Pequenos [small] Podenco Medios [medium] and Podenco Grandes, [large]

They all share a common ancestry and have been bred for specific hunting niches.

They are closely related to Ibizan Hounds, which I have rescued since 1990 and I have one Portuguese Podengo Medio, Gypsy.

Execellent rabbit dogs!

And here is the amazing Flying Zarita, again. :)
