Broken baby food jar leads to Sweden's first unstaffed grocery store

Late night stores are scarce and the nearest large town is Helsingborg, 20 minutes drive away, a problem for Ilijason when one night he was in urgent need of food for his baby.

The concept behind his unstaffed store is simple. An app, linked to a user’s bank ID, is used to unlock the door and then become a scanner to scan the groceries. An invoice follows at the end of the month.

“So once you’ve opened the door, the app automatically turns into scan mode and you can buy whatever you want to buy,” Ilijason explained.

For security reasons, the door remains open for only eight seconds and cameras are installed in the store. The idea is member-based and a credit check is done on new members.

It would be deemed racist here. Will probably be deemed racist there too. After all it is not exactly catering to their newly arrived uninvited guests.

Sweden needs to consider Mormon pantries.

I remember when I saw online shopping for the first time. In West Berlin. In 1981. Europeans can be ahead of the curve on these things sometimes.

Interesting.

Questions do pop up...

More expensive? Probably.

Membership and credit check, good.

Demand based stock,probably work ok.

Wonder how much trouble will crop up with people barging in with members...8 seconds is plenty long. You could probably make it from 20 feet.

Robberies leaving?

The really bad...somebody won’t be getting a job as cashier...

Imagine the flash mobs looting the store. Sorry to think in those terms. But wonder if it would work in an American city with a significant black population.

The Aldi business model is damned close. I love Aldi. Two people run the store at any given time. Customers even haul away the trash.

The Family Dollar near me is plagued by black customers who just run out the door with anything they can carry. The employees are told not to attempt to stop them. I offered to stand outside with a baseball bat and swing away when they come running out the door? The employees don’t even care.

We have a certain culture here that has developed something similar. It's called a smash-and-grab. I am not sure how they handle the financial transaction. some_text

For Ilijason, a technician, it all started one night with a broken baby food jar and a hungry, screaming baby. “It was the last one and I panicked,” he said. After having to drive to the city for a new one, he decided that Viken needed a store that was always open. And being a technician, he used technology to solve the problem of having expensive personnel working day and night.

Jeez dude, learn to boil something into mush and then mash it up. It's a lot easier than becoming a programmer.

This seems to be the place:

Probably not difficult to brace the door open for a flash mob.

We'll see how the New Swedes like it.

I know someone that manages a location for one of the major home centers. They’ve had to fire employees for trying to stop people from stealing. All they can do is call the police and hope they get there on time.

So you had to 300 baud modem, rotary dial it and wrap the receiver with that Velcro wrap thingy and order using the black and white TV with Pong level graphics?

That was about it. Stone knives and bearskins. The only business on the service was a grocery store. Not much more than an experiment, really.

Good comment. It would be a serious crime magnet here. It would be a rape center in Sweden.

I have 3 different ‘dollar stores’ near me. One I never go into for that reason. Every single time I’ve been in there the employees are watching some black person stick stuff in their clothes and just walk out the door. The employees will say something to them but are not allowed to do anything else, and the thief knows that.
There’s a much nicer Dollar Tree in the other direction that gets my biz.
