Supply-chain report says iPhone SE taking Chinese market share from local brands Xiaomi, Huawei

We’ve been hearing mixed reports about iPhone SE sales in general, but Apple’s latest 4-incher does appear to be a big hit in China. After a previous report claimed third-party retailers in the country received 3.4M preorders before the phone went on sale, a new supply-chain report says that local brands like Xiaomi and Huawei are being hit hard by Apple offering its cheapest-ever iPhone.

The launch of relatively low-priced iPhone SE in China has squeezed market share from local brands, including Huawei, Xiaomi Technology, Vivo and Oppo, affecting the earning performance of these brands, said the sources.

The source is Digitizes, so caution is advised, but makers of camera modules for local brands are reportedly seeing only 70-80% of predicted orders.

Kantar recently reported that Apple had experienced its first fall in market share in China in the twelve months ending in February, but did note then that the iPhone SE had the potential to reverse the drop.

Apple might as well be a “local brand” in China; the phones are made in China by Foxconn, are they not?

Tim Cook knows supply chain like no one in the biz. This product was specifically designed to smash Huawei. I don’t know anyone in the U.S. interested in the phone.

8 of the 10 largest cellphone markets in the world are in Asia. Anybody making their phones anywhere else is making a mistake.

Bought a SE beginning of the month and found that a small percentage of my calls are unintelligible because of static. Can’t seem to detect any pattern with which calls have static, doesn’t seem to relate to location of the call, using my car’s blue-tooth connection or whom I’m calling. Took it back to Apple, they couldn’t duplicate the problem and gave me another. Still getting static on some calls on the second phone but perhaps not as many. Not sure what the problem is.

They are assembled by FoxConn, but many of the parts come from all over the world, including many from the USA. It is designed in California, not China.

Are you on AT&T? I started getting some static on a small percentage of calls about a month ago on my iPhone 6S which I have had for about six months. No static before that. I am on AT&T. Disconnecting the call and calling back and the static is gone.It seems to be on the network. The caller could not hear it. I've had callers tell me they've heard the static too, and they were on Android phones, also on AT&T's network. They said they got it calling family who also had Android phones as well. Sounds like it's a carrier issue, not a phone issue.

If he can increase market share in China without cannibalizing sales of higher priced phones in the US he is a true genius.
