Around 1960 there seemed to be a lot of interest in “Project Mohole”. I remember reading about it in “My Weekly Reader”.
I think it was going to drill through the earth’s crust and discover what was inside. I think it was somewhere in the Caribbean.
It sort of died out without so much as a whimper.

I remember a few years back hearing a recording supposedly from a Russian deep drilling project which sounded like a bunch of hideous screams & tormented wailing. I don’t know if it was really Hell or not, but it was the creepiest thing I’ve ever heard and I couldn’t listen to it very long.
