Back then, we had swamp cooler for the car. It hung from
the driver’s window and was a cylindrical pad inside a tube partially submerged in water. The front end of it brought in air which evaporated the pad, sending cooler air into the car. There was a string you pulled when the pad got dry that rotated the pad back into the water. If you pulled the string real fast, it slopped water out of the cooler and blew it upside the driver’s head. Good times.

Sounds like 2016

War--against Islamic terrorists around the world

Nuclear fear in a daily basis--The nuclear threats from Russia and China haven't gone away, Iran is about to join the nuclear club, and there is the threat of atomic weapons in the hands of terrorists

Polio--making a comeback in Syria, from which tens of thousands of "refugees" are headed this way

Communism--coming from Washington, DC and Sacramento

*** I was going to post pretty much the same comments , but got distracted for a few minutes . I know one thing , as an 8 year old in 1960 , living in an eastern CT town which at the time had a population of around 9,000 ...I could walk down the street any time of day or night and never fear . According to friends who still reside in the area , you take your life in your hands - if you are white that is - if you just get out of your car to take a photo or two . Completely taken over by illegals . Sad ...

The 1950s were not the best of times for Republican conservatives. The GOP was in the hands of “Modern Republicans”—we call them RINOs today—who tightened their grip following the death of Sen. Robert A. Taft (R-Ohio), the leader of the Senate’s conservatives, in 1953. Every year following the Republican victory of 1952, the number of Republicans in Congress steadily dwindled, climaxing in the Democrat blowout of 1958.

But one bright spot was the rise of Sen. Barry Goldwater as a major voice of conservatism. After he bucked the Democrat landslide to win re-election in 1958, he began to emerge as a presidential possibility.

I live in Phoenix. I wish Goldwater had been elected. When I first moved here I heard more of him, course I heard of him before but this town used to love the guy.

Friend of mine designed his house. Paul Yaeger.

This could produce some serous slow dancing. Truly amazing how one can understand every word sung, unlike today’s music. Reminiscent of the tune A Thousand Stars by Kathy Young. Great tune, great voice and an enjoyable slow dance number. Give it a 10

The fifties produced some memorable moments in it’s decade.

In very few areas of the country , as you no doubt know. Now , reverse racism rules the land .

Lived in South Florida. I was terrified. The drills made it worse. Get under our desk if Castro launches a nuclear missile? Even as a child I figured that wouldn’t do much good. Now we just worry about ISIS.

Speaking of special little snowflakes...

Snowflake is a town in Navajo County, Arizona. It was founded in 1878 by Erastus Snow (1818-1888) and William Jordan Flake (1839-1932), Mormon pioneers and colonizers.

Judge Grant Murray Snow and Senator Jeff Flake are two of the many, great great grandsons of the above founders.

“The Korean War began in 1950,
as we lived in fear of nuclear
Russia. Not so peaceful,
not so fun.”

I graduated high school in 1950.

It was a great decade.

Beautiful music. I remember the radio on top of the kitchen refrigerator while my mom cooked and much of this was on it.

Quality stuff.

I was about the same age in 1960. In the summer of that year, I regularly rode my bike down every alley in the neighborhood. Even at the age of 3, I walked down the block alone and unsupervised. Today, many of the homes in the area, including our old house feature burglar bars in the windows.

White only drinking fountains

A friend of mine who grew up in California made a trip to East Texas around 1952 and encountered a drinking fountain in a department store labeled "colored." Thinking that a soft drink like Coca Cola or root beer might flow out of it, he took a drink and was disappointed to find that it was only water. An employee of the store noted that my friend and his folks were "not from around here" and had to explain to them the local custom.
