I was wondering if anyone else here recently donated to Trump's campaign.... directly through his site.
I did on 6/30 using my debit card, which I never use (except for things like this... the only other time I've used it recently was for a donation to Free Republic, but that was a couple months ago).
I saw an unauthorized charge on my statement this morning... for $50 on someone's cellphone Starbucks app.
so, I called the bank and cancelled the card and they'll reverse the charge of course.... but since this donation was my only use of the card in months, it sure seems that the data breach was from Trump's site.
So, anyone else donating via his site should monitor their accounts.
I figured liberals would see it as a moral obligation to hack the site and thus bought multiple visa gift cards to make donations to Trump with.
try to mention to Trump - they may be able to check on their end of merchant account to be sure all is ok, or not?
I sent an email to the address on the Thank You auto-email that the donation generated... I hope someone monitors those emails. I imagine they get tons of spam sent to them, but I have no idea how else to alert them.
I used my debit card only as an ATM card — never as a debit card. Nevertheless, I had a series of fraudulent debit card charges made on it. My bank is a local bank, and they actually talked to me when I demanded answers. I almost always used the cards at bank ATM locations, but a couple of weeks before the fraud, I used the card at an ATM in a Citgo gas station / convenience store. The bank rep speculated that there was a skimmer attached to that ATM. Needless to say, I’ll never go back to that gas station, and I’ll never use my card at any ATM not attached to a real bank / credit union.
That’s about all you can do, unless you are into fb social media stuff to try to contact that way, or maybe do they have a main phone number for campaign?
I was just considering donating to him, I think I’ll wait a bit, or snail mail a check.
I’ve donated more than once and not had any issues, either his site or his group with the RNC.
Nothing weird on my statement. Maybe it was a debit card thing only. Those seem to get hit the most.
Pain in the butt these breaches... fortunately, I've gotten hit only twice in 20 years or so (counting this one).
Use Paypal when possible.
FR accepts Paypal.
If Paypal is not an option, use credit card.
My credit card has zero liability for fraudulent use.
I hate PayPal.... so I’ll probably use a credit card next time, although I think I have the came protections from Chase on the debit card... at least I hope so. I’m a Private Client with Chase, so they do try to keep us happy on these sorts of things.
I send cash to the FR address, when I have some extra. The last time I had credit card fraud it was a gas station on the reservation. Within 15 minutes, my card info had been used at a casino two states away. I will never go to that gas station again.
A week later I tried to use the Amex card at a gas pump and it was declined. Turns out someone called Amex and pretended to be me, claimed the card was lost and had a replacement card sent to them at a different address in the L.A. area.
The data breach there had to be someone at the car dealer since I didn't use the card anywhere else.
I have never given my address to any political organization, though I am a Registered Republican in my County and I got a letter last week from the Donald.
I put his Make America Great Again bumper sticker on the first prius I saw with obummer stickers on it.
Same here. I’ve donated 3 times so far and all is well.
Even though fraud protection is the same, with the debit card money is deducted immediately from your bank account. If that causes balance to go negative, bank will charge overdraft fees. All that can be reversed but it is a hassle.
With credit card, a fraudulent charge is simply a line item on your statement, and you have 60 days with most cards to submit a dispute claim. My card allows me to file the dispute on-line, and then I can subtract the charge while paying the credit card.
My Amex was declined at a gas station while I was on a cross country drive from Seattle to Florida! It had nothing to do with any of my charges. It was because some store where I had used the card was hacked, so Amex cancelled all cards used at that store! That was a huge inconvenience, and I was on the phone with Amex for 50 minutes for them to re-activate my card so I could finish my journey.
I've had transactions delayed a couple of times by Amex while I was overseas, and they tell the merchants to have me call them to verify that it's really me. As I remember, it was pretty quick and easy, and I was appreciative that they were looking out for me (well, for themselves really).
If your card is one of the newer ones with an embedded micro-chip, it is possible that someone scanned your card while it was still in your wallet. That is the new trend in credit card/ATM Card theft.
The only defense is to either get a shielded/RF-proof wallet, or ask your bank for RF blocker sleeves for your chip enabled cards.
And the banks said the new cards would be safer...pffft.
Yes, it is a chip card, so that is a possibility. I do carry it, but never use it from outside the house... not even sure why I carry it around.
I agree that the "chip and sign" is stupid... and pretty much worthless as a security measure. They should have gone to the "chip and pin" method instead.
Since debit cards are also Visa cards, all someone needs is the number and expiration date to use it.
