Controversy over Oklahoma magazine cover

An Oklahoma magazine is stirring up controversy.

Inside Friday’s Daily Ardmoreite edition was this season’s Southern Oklahoma Living magazine.

When Gene Autry’s mayor, Kyle Lawson, saw the cover his jaw nearly dropped.

“My first initial reaction was I almost spit my coffee out when I first saw it,” Lawson said.

On the cover is a baby in a costume supposed to resemble the tin man.

“Just the way that the hood kind of goes up and the handle for the tin man`s hat is kind of hidden behind the 'I',” Lawson said. “And just the way the flap comes down on the side it looks like one of the Klansmen baby outfits.”

Others are weighing in on the controversial image.

“I wouldn`t have thought of that when I first looked at it. No, but I didn`t think of the tin man either, but I didn`t see nothing wrong with it,” Ardmore resident Tasha Kinney said.

“KKK. That`s what I thought,” Kirk Rushing, an Ardmore community leader, said.

The Ardmoreite publishes the magazine and a number of people are asking for the paper to apologize.

“As bad as we hate to say it we live in a world where you have to be cautious,” Rushing said.

News Channel 4 stopped by to talk to the publisher.

She was not there, but we got a copy of Sunday’s paper.

In it she wrote an article titled “Friday was a sad day in Ardmore”.

She wrote, "Unfortunately, with the current climate in the country, even the most innocuous imagery can be misconstrued into something hateful and destructive."

The article went on to say, "I don't have a formal apology but here's what I will say, if you were offended by the photo I'm sorry you didn't see what I saw. Or what I'm sure many other people saw -- a child dressed as an iconic character from one of the most beloved films of the Twentieth Century."

We are told the costume was store bought.

One local woman said she is taking the picture to the NAACP.

When you are a racist, everything is about race.

There is an unfortunate resemblance but I sincerely doubt it was intended by the magazine or the reporter.

Well yeah...it’s pretty clear from the article that it happened in Oklahoma.

;) ;) ;)

I know the fix!

BAN all photos in all newspapers, magazines and online! That’ll stop all of this obvious racism! /s

“My first initial reaction was I almost spit my coffee out when I first saw it,” Lawson said.

Which is why people are meant to use their BRAINS and LOGIC to figure out what reality is, and not be a slave to your emotions. Otherwise, we are just a dogs barking at shadows, which exactly is what this guy is doing.

Solution: Just put a damn chicken in the background which, with the baby, would make it a Coo-Clucks-Clan costume (yeah, I know ... that’s pretty bad ...)

Looks like a Klan outfit to me, but with the cross being replaced by a clock on a heart.

If I saw that photo without knowing it was supposed to be a tin man costume, I’d likely think it was a klan hood, myself.

Because nothing says fall like pumpkins,
changing foliage, and the Ku Klux Klan.

I have a solution for this problem. Every white male should be required to have a microchip placed in their head.
Anytime they think a racist or sexist thought they will receive a severe shock.

Love, Hillary

Didn’t read it. Watched the video. Saw the picture before it was described and immediately thought

A). Tin Man (clock on chest....the heart)

And

B). Some jerk is going to see a klan outfit and have a $h!tfit.

If the tin man had a heart he wouldn’t have joined the Klan....

Enough of this garbage. It’s just enough. Either kill us or shut up. Literally. Just shut up.

This is what one black resident said about the cover:

'I wouldn`t have thought of [the KKK] when I first looked at it. No, but I didn't think of the tin man either, but I didn`t see nothing wrong with it,' Ardmore resident Tasha Kinney said.

My thoughts exactly. See -- you can get agreement among the races sometimes.

Underneath the child, it says ‘Chickasaw Culture’ and the Chickasaws did fight for the Confederacy. And I think we can all figure out what ‘Beautify Ardmore’ is code for.

Maybe the baby is just going through a phase. You know, exploring his world and its boundaries, kinda like how chicks go off to university and do lesbo stuff for 4 years.

First thing that came to my mind. Even the texture of the fabric is spot on.
