It is being billed as the most expensive TV series ever produced—with a budget of $130 million—and the first official trailer for the forthcoming Netflix series The Crown is setting high expectations among fans of costume dramas. The Netflix drama focuses on Queen Elizabeth II as a 25-year-old newlywed faced with a series of unimaginably daunting private and personal challenges as she ascends to the throne following the unexpected death of her father, George VI.

A lot of coin for a TV series. Looks great.

It doesn’t sound like my cup of tea but Netflix has put out some really good original series. “Stranger Things” and “Narcos” were both very good.

And they bought Longmire (good judgment, on their part). And Lilyhammer was theirs, plus Bloodline. They have a bunch of other series and movies that I want to catch up on, or are upcoming. Netflix is good at this. I hope they can stay that way.

I like Lilyhammer too. By the last season it was pretty played out but up to then it was great.

I just hope that Netflix, and to an extent Amazon, are leading the way towards a new golden age of quality shows. Because the networks and the older cable stations have been churning out utter garbage for a very long time, now, with very few exceptions.

I like House of Cards, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and even Bojack Horseman. Netflix is positioning themselves as a major player when it comes to original content.

I don’t even subscribe to cable TV anymore. A simple antenna to pick up OTA broadcasts is fine for the few times I want to see broadcast TV.

And Netflix dumps all their episodes at once, so you can watch it on your own terms.

Was that John Lithgow playing Churchill?

A good overview to bookmark: List of original programs distributed by Netflix

Amazon is fairly good, as well, with both Bosch and Man in the High Castle, which IMO is one of the best productions ever. More limited, but there seems to be an emphasis on quality.

Anything is better than the ridiculous Game of Thrones.

Huh?

Band of BROTHERS cost 150 Million in 2003 and The PACIFIC cost 200 Million in 2010.

I was “forced” into Amazon and Netflix a couple of years ago by a couple of my kids and I did NOT want them.

Best things EVER.

Mother doesn’t always know best.

I know someone down the street from mine who worked on that production. It was shot mostly in the UK and back then the pound vs dollar ratio was small but inflated during the later last months. The budget was originally $50 mil.

I like house of cards but didn’t like the latest season. Hopefully less time for First Lady next season. I don’t like her character at all.
