No, but it is illegal for them to hold someone prisoner who has expressed their desire to leave, except in a few very narrow circumstances.

They of course routinely try to make patients believe that they can do that, and don’t like to admit willingly that they cannot stop patients from leaving. I have found you have to be very assertive with hospital staff when you demand to discharge yourself. Usually simply asking “do I need to call my lawyer?” will get their butts moving on the paperwork though.

Hubby discharged hisself last year. They told him.....insurance won’t pay if you leave on your own. He told the nurse....that’s BS and you need to quit lying to people. I’m leaving.
She scurried out and brought back a paper for him to sign stating he was leaving against a doctors advice. That was that.

In order to get a hospital to release you assuming you are not a mental case you must sign an AMA form
