December 2, 2016 Cyberbullying Pushed Texas Teen To Commit Suicide, Family Says

TEXAS CITY, Texas -- Family members of a Houston-area high school student who killed herself are rallying for tighter laws against cyberbullying. Brandy Vela’s family says cyberbullying pushed the 18-year-old over the edge, leading her to shoot herself in the chest Tuesday afternoon at the family’s Texas City home as family members watched.

Her father, Raul Vela, said she had been receiving abusive text messages for months from bullies using an untraceable smartphone application. Her father said someone made a fake Facebook page of her, creating another cyberbullying medium.

On Tuesday, Brandy sent an email to her family members telling them she was going to kill herself, CBS Houston affiliate KHOU-TV reports. They rushed home and found her alive.

“We tried to persuade her to put the gun down, but she was determined,” Raul Vela told KHOU-TV. “She said she’d come too far to turn back. It was very unfortunate that I had to see that. It’s hard when your daughter tells you to turn around. You feel helpless.”

I’d wager there’s a lot more to this story than the report covers.

Psyops designed to get unfluential youngsters to commit suicide so the Federal government can create MORE laws and insert themselves as the authority figure of the family.

I’m always conflicted when these stories hit. On the one hand yes bullying is bad, bullies are bad, we really shouldn’t suffer dicks in society. On the other hand, life is tough, at some point in your life you WILL be dumped, fired, and bury loved ones, anybody that can’t survive some bullying is doomed. So I don’t know. It’s sad, and the bullies should be slapped around but she was bound to kill herself over something.

Ditto.

BTW, anyone figured out where she got the gun. I don't think it was from her snowflake daddy who did as his daughter ORDERED and TURNED AROUND so he wouldn't see her shoot herself. THANKS DAD.

Ex-boyfriend? Jealous classmate, coworker, family friend, or neighbor?

My son was bullied throughout elementary school. He had a tough time dealing with it, but I taught him to turn the other cheek if he could. If he couldn't, he was encouraged to unleash hate, and that's exactly what happened in his first year of junior high.

Got the call one day from the school office. My son had gotten into a fight, and the school was prepared to suspend him and the other kid for 3 days. When I got there, I asked my son what happened. His response: "He had me backed against the wall. There wasn't anything else I could do, so I hit him. When he didn't go down, I hit him again, and he went down. That's when the teachers showed up."

The kid he fought was indeed the kid that had bullied him for at least a couple years. I made it clear at that point that, if the school chose to suspend my child, I would drag them through the mud so bad with a negative media campaign. After a couple hour discussion with the principle, it was determined my son acted in self defense, and he would not be punished.

When we left the school, I took my son out for ice cream. I'm happy to report that he is now 23 years old, and quite the sheep dog. :D

I agree. This is is broad audience where just about everyone is allowed to join in. This becomes a free for all against one. We are dealing here with victims who lack maturity and or proper parental guidance.

“I can’t help but wonder why they didn’t all just unplug and get off the facebook stuff and just live their lives”

I thought the same too. Do you get your friends from the internet? That’s lame.

Heartbreaking story. Lot of issues here: family, school, faith, etc. Agree with not being able to get away from social media....a child (really an adult in this case) cannot escape from the stigma created online.

It's really sad people tear down others for pleasure. Nothing to be gained by engaging in this behavior.

Cyberbullying? Is that on the internet? If so, then why go on the internet?

The family running to the press is a red alert tip-off of foul play.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the father was the one who pulled the trigger and this cyber-bullying thing is a red herring alibi.

I was bullied in school. Badly. Even this many decades on I can tell you the name of the asshat - Tony Blake.

I finally the end of my very young rope - asked my dad what to do.

He gave a foot long ruler.

What am I supposed to do with this?

“Beat his ass to within an inch of his life” he said. “Bullies are bullies because they think they can get away with it. Show him he can’t keep it up.”

So, you won’t get mad?

NO, Dad said - you *start) a fight and I’ll get plenty steamed. If someone else starts the fight, I expect you to finish it.

The next time Tony started pushing - I told him - Don’t start.

Like the earlier story, we both wound up at the front office. I went back to class, Tony went to the doctor and then was expelled.

As for cyberbullies. I can only guess that filtering or blocks might be an answer. Cyberbully are the worst kind of physical **coward**.....

“That means that the bully is someone known to her.”

Or is her

I’m in my early 50’s. When I was in junior High, I was bullied by this little punk who always had his posse of football players with him, so I always ended up on the losing end. One day, this moron chose to confront me alone. He was also too stupid to see the cheese grater in my hand. (it was being used in art class to grate wax for a project)

Cheese graters also grate skin.

He lost, I won, he never bugged me again.

My son had a similar issue when he was in Boy Scouts. I was the leader and I worked with the kids dad, so I was walking a tight line. I took my friend out for lunch one day and told him his kid was acting badly and bullying some of the boys. Of course I got the whole “not Myyyy son” routine.

Finally, my kid had enough and fought back, drawing blood. Problem solved.

The advice to turn the other cheek then unleash hate is good and wise advice. Kenny Rogers song Coward of the County is a prime example.

Same here, except one the school bus. No help from the driver or others. Finally lost it and tried to choke the shit out of the perp. Didn't kill him, but he never bothered me again.

Results the same: Show them there will be a cost and they leave you for weaker prey...

I don't understand people that think "just don't go online" is the answer -- or why giving the perpetrator that kind of power is the answer. Regardless, the pervasiveness of cyberbullying is so all-encompassing; it doesn't get resolved because one screen goes dark.

Cyberbullying...what a silly concept. If a kid’s peers (or strangers) are saying mean things the parents should just encourage the kid to ignore it and promise him/her that this, too, shall pass.Of course credible threats of physical harm are another matter.

That’s about all the local station reported but there has to be more to it. The parents took themselves out of the child’s life. It’s the parents’ responsibility, not the school’s. The numbskull parents never thought of moving her to another school or disconnecting the internet or getting her a new phone with a new number and without internet. At 18, the girl should have known enough to stay off social media. It’s not that hard. But then people killing themselves over it. Mind boggling how their whole lives revolve around evil facebook.

I pity the snowflakes’ children. Snowflake parents so focused on their social media they ignore their children. The only time they will notice them is when they’re posting pictures of them for every sex fiend to see and sicko to see.
