Harassing calls on my cell

Posted on 01/18/2017 2:50:12 PM PST by A Cyrenian

I'm getting calls on my cell phone from numbers that don't exist. When I try to look up the number on the net I'm seeing "someone has spoofed the caller id".

These calls started right before the election and have continued since.

I have added the number as a contact and then block that caller but they just switch to a different number. I never answer the call, I select don't accept option on my phone.

Are you getting these and do you know of a way to stop them?

The NoRobo app works pretty well.

Free on a droid.

My cell phone still has a 651 area code (Minnesota).
When I get a human, I answer “Deputy Steve Ganrud, Dakota County Sheriff’s Department”
But the business loan scams, I tell them that I’ve built a business importing olive oil, and have branched into gambling, deep discount merchandise, security services, and financing. Then I ask them if they are trying to edge into my territory. Then I ask if I have to arrange that they meet Vito the Expeditor. Vito has no neck.

No sadly, I think they also get them from your State’s DOT. I think some States sell them. It should be outlawed.

Most of these callers don't use numbers you can even call them back, it will give that message about a non working number. The IRS scam however uses numbers that you CAN call back. I spend many hours behind the wheel, so I have plenty of "spare" time. I keep redialing the IRS butt heads until the number gets disconnected. I have had some very vile conversations with the women that have answered. A couple got every bit as good as a phone sex call.

Very interesting note however. The IRS calls stopped about four months or so ago, right after I saw a story on the news where they busted a big call center somewhere that was doing this scam. I used to get them about once a month.

I love jacking with telemarketers, I used to screw with the guy's selling aluminum siding back forty years ago.

I almost never give my cell phone to anyone other than close friends and family. Everyone else gets my land line number.

I limit my contact list. Only people that I want to talk to are in that list. If a call comes in that has no name, I don’t answer it. Unfortunately, I had a couple of occasions that I had to give my cell phone to others because I was at the hospital with a relative.

After that, I did get a few calls, but I just don’t answer. Sometimes I look them up and it’s usually telemarket or some scam.

It is illegal to spoof a caller ID.

I use Call Cop on my cell phone and block entire area codes.

Advertisers and pollsters at websites you visit are planting cookies which capture your phone number for marketing purposes.

Go to settings. Clear cookies. Clear history. Do this frequently. It helps.
I do this in addition to selecting the “Block cookies from third parties” option which I keep on all the time. The marketers manage to bypass it somehow.

I started asking them if they were US citizens, and that gets a lot to hang up, and if they said yes, I would say, “are you here legally? Because you don’t have to work in a fraudulent business, you can go out and get a real job.” I also ask, “are you being held against your will and being forced to make these calls? Do you need help?” Boy, they hang up fast and it has done away with a good number of those.

Yes, if anyone’s # is on the do not call registry. These clowns cannot call. They still will from time to time. Just say you are on the list. That shuts them up for me.

you may be able to whitelist, ie only let contacts in your phone list be able to complete calls. all depends on your phone and carrier. Otherwise change your number and only give it to people you want to use it.

Tonight’s version was music...classical. Lovely. I let it go on and on...apparently it will be an infinity call.

I also say, “You are being recorded now and I have your caller ID. Prepare to be reported and prepare to die as my father has been.”

I use “Safest Call Blocker” which works, and I can block patterns like an area code or prefix, but I wish I could stop the blocked calls from going to VM.

Just say you are on the list.

Virtually all robo calls for me and the dnc registry doesn't work for mobiles.

Start answering with different business names.

Will's Gun Shop, Harry's Demolitions Service, Amy's Mortuary (You stab 'em, We slab 'em)

That's a great idea. Easy to implement too, since you can play the tones directly from that Wikipedia page while you record your message.
