I am not computer savvy at all but I know that many freepers are....All of the sudden my laptop's internal speakers quit working. Did a systems restore. Trouble shooter found nothing wrong. Computer thinks the speakers are working but there is no sound. Zip. Nada. Is it time to purchase external speakers?

It isn’t difficult to reinstall or update drivers...you can do it...

Not kidding about going into town. I truly like staying in the woods.
Yes...The UPS trucks do come out here. The neighbor lady gets a lot of stuff on line to keep from going into town. Its a nice little town but we like it here in the country.

I will have to pass on the drop test. Everything else works fine.

thank you

Is it critical that I download the audio driver for 7 specifically? Or is matching the brand of the computer close enough?

If the treble and bass graphs are moving, your computer is getting sound, and the sound card is probably OK. Did you check the actual speaker cables, make sure they are fully plugged in,,,haven’t come loose?

Since it is a laptop, the speaker is built-in. No cables. BUT thank you for advising me on the sound card.

Its okay. Because it is good to learn that it does not have a bad sound card.

I recently had this same problem with my Dell computer running Windows 7.

I called tech support and they put me through all the standard steps. I gave them online access to my computer — they ran tests, downloaded and installed new drivers. Nothing worked.

Finally, they decided that there was a problem with the motherboard. They sent an onsite technician over to replace it and also installed new speakers. It’s working now.

I always buy online site support for my laptops, because they always have problems, and I can’t afford to send it back to the manufacturer because I can’t be without it for that length of time. I work at home and I need it for work (and also for Freeping).

Anyway, I don’t know what brand you’ve got, but if you have access to tech support, that might be the place to start.

If they have one specifically for Windows 7 that’s the one to use. Otherwise, get their latest. Make sure to search for the correct one for your exact model/serial number. Most brands have really good driver support and installation processes.

If a neighbor has some headphones, plug them in to see if you hear sound. If you hear sound, just buy some external speakers and problem solved.

I did ask my neighbors and they don’t have any speakers that would work. Darned.

It’s pretty straightforward. Also check for disabled items in the sound section and devices section. Microsoft has tons of instructions.

computer is not very old but I like 7

Here is something everyone should do, but few will do it. You know how you're supposed to periodically drain your water heater to empty out the rusty crud at the bottom, which impedes efficiency and can cause failure? And most people don't, resulting in a failed water heater?

Periodically take apart your laptop computer. Use an aerosol air-can to blow out all the accumulated dust bunnies, especially in and around the fans. You might also see a buildup on the speakers. This will help keep your laptop running cool and efficient, and may prevent various future problems and failures.

Get a set of external amplified speakers, either wired or Bluetooth. Much more enjoyable listening.

Found this suggestion online,,someone having the same problem:

“there is a sensor in the headphone jack that tells the computer to turn the speakers off when there is headphones plugged in, and sometimes that sensor gets jammed and the computer thinks there is headphones plugged in when there isn’t.

Solution: Get a tooth pick or something and stick it in there to un-jam the sensor.”

That is very tempting.
I don’t want to make a bad situation worse though.

Sorry Sister but you need to turn off your computer and never turn it on again.

Excellent. Step 1 - get headphones and plug it in the jack. Do that before doing anything else messing with your computer if you have never updated drivers before. Surely someone has a set of headphones around there. Good grief.
