Speaker Bercow: Trump should not speak in Parliament
BBC News ^ | 2/6/17

Posted on 02/06/2017 10:43:28 PM PST by RC one

House of Commons Speaker John Bercow would be "strongly opposed" to US President Donald Trump addressing the Houses of Parliament during his state visit to the UK, he has said.

Mr Bercow told MPs that "opposition to racism and sexism" were "hugely important considerations".

Labour and the SNP praised him but critics said he should stay neutral.

President Trump was invited to make a state visit after meeting Theresa May in Washington last month.

A petition to withdraw the invitation - and another one backing the visit - will be debated by MPs later this month.

Responding to a point of order in the Commons, Mr Bercow set out his opposition to a Parliamentary address as part of the state visit.

He told MPs that addressing the Lords and the Commons was "an earned honour", not an "automatic right".

He said he was one of three "key-holders" for Westminster Hall, and referred to the US president's controversial travel ban.

"Before the imposition of the migrant ban, I would myself have been strongly opposed to an address by President Trump in Westminster Hall," he said.

"After the imposition of the migrant ban I am even more strongly opposed to an address by President Trump in Westminster Hall."

The Speaker said he would also be involved in any invitation to address Parliament's Royal Gallery.

And God help the UK should proof ever come to light that Whitehall had a hand in the dirty dossier...

I have cancelled plans to travel to Great Britain - a place I used to visit annually. The hatred expressed by their newspapers, Facebook Brits, have turned me off completely to spending money there. What a nation of virtue-signaling midgets!

We’ve been to GB a few times over the years. Can’t believe how much it’s changed. And not for the better.

But in Brexit they have an opportunity to right their ship of state. I hope they take it. And take their country back. While they’re at it, they really should write themselves a constitution.

Note to the UK: Feel free to crib ours, especially the Bill of Rights.

You know what, I’m getting to the point with the UK where I think I might just tell them to go to hell, cancel the trip, and break off any discussions of a trade deal. They are about to embark on a new journey and if they want to start it off by continuously spitting in the face of their only and best companion, so be it.

Since when have you known liberals not to be more motivated and outspoken than their opponents? Opinion polls have shown that more people support Trump’s visit than don’t, but unlike the regressive leftists have other things to worry about. Its not like your country lacks for regressive liberals.

The UK Government is inviting him to the UK and most Brits are in favour of it vs those who are not. Why do you care more about what the noisy minority and the opposition believes? We could judge the US by exactly the same standards because your country is also riddled with noisy leftists despite its government.

As I’ve said though, Brits seem obsessed with petitions. Americans not so much.

Are you the scotsman back under a different name, lol? What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Don’t defend your country’s complete meltdown over Trump. Be embarrassed about it!

If I were Trump, I would not comment on this matter. Let the Brits aregue this point among themselves.

(*sigh*) What are the chances of that happening?

Let UKIP Farage continue to stir the pot. Patience. Better yet, Trump speaks to UKIP.

You say a tiny minority but Lord Ricketts is going around talking about how the Queen is in such a tough spot over this visit, implying she wants no parts of Trump right now.

Look, when China rolled out a red carpet for every leader in the world except Obama, who they made crawl out of the back of his plane next to the guys carrying groceries that was a deliberate snub. And nations like the Philippines who are looking at whether to stick with traditional but of late undependable ally the USA or align with China see that as a show of how weak the USA really is and how bold and strong China is. The optics matter on a global level. When the UK invites Trump then sends him to a lesser venue to speak, then (potentially) cancels his speech there are those who will see this for what it is: a government with a weak and uncertain relationship with the USA. Good luck negotiating with Brussels with those optics playing out.

I wonder if it’s the “many will be deceived” thing.

The hatred is completely unfounded. It really is. They hate without viewing the facts. Some won’t even allow themselves to be presented by fact.
