Funny thing...Asheville is flaming progressive, but Buncombe County runs red. Asheville and surrounding suburbs have lots of goodies (GREAT farmer’s markets and restaurants), but to avoid libs, I stayed on the Tennessee side of the mountains...quite a few Freepers there.

I’m in PA. I was homeschooled here and can assure you, any other state is better for homeschooling. The stench of totalitarianism is inescapable.
But for guns, it’s hard to find a better state (aside from the frozen ones).
Unless you’re in the northwest section, the weather’s great here.
Crime is low, taxes are peanuts.
And yet I would move to NC if I could, and take my people with me. They miss the ocean badly. I wouldn’t mind seeing it either.
Find something not too close to the city, nor too far from the church!

North Carolina is a crazy quilt of left vs right, urban vs rural, town vs gown, bathroom access, etc.

Avoid the confusion and come to South Carolina. Conservative political culture, gun friendly, good homeschooling climate, minimal Muslim problem & other attractions. Upstate (the Piedmont) is somewhat techie/urban/liberal but nothing like Asheville or Chapel Hill.

Nice coastline & resort towns, as well. You’ll like it here.

Still no hunting allowed with autoloaders in PA?

I’m originally from NJ, but have been here in Greenville, SC for 20+ years.

Check out Greenville, SC. over North Carolina. We are 1 hour south of Asheville and it is the best kept secret in the south.

Excellent economy, lots of jobs and opportunities, almost everyone is Conservative (a belt buckle of the bible belt) and it is rated as one of the best places to live if you do your research.

Also, a lower cost of living than NC and it is a big homeschooling area.

Those people you’re perceiving as characters out of Deliverance are likely very decent just with different standards of appearance and personal grooming, lol. I learned that at university up that way.

Had a breakdown with my car hours from anything, in the middle of nowhere, with my girlfriend. Sat, for hours. No traffic, pre cell phone. We were just about to start walking when a very Beverly Hillbillies looking derelict pickup truck that I was surprised could even run puttered around the curve. I could see the three male occupants and as you say, first thought to an outsider would be Deliverance. We were very concerned to the point of frightened.

They stopped, got out of the truck, lumbered over to my Mustang and popped the hood. Looked around for a minute, one popped his head out from under the hood, spat chewing tobacco and said “Corr ain’t got no forr.” What? I asked. “Corr ain’t got no forr.” I don’t understand, I said. “No forr, timin’ belt’s broke.” Oh, I said.

They offered us a ride back to the interstate and a motel, in the bed of that pickup truck. With no options we accepted. They took us straight there, it was a Sunday, blue laws, no garages were open. They refused any money for helping us.

So, be careful about judging those people. Most of them aren’t what you think.

Asheville is left leaning, but there are a large number of traditionals there too, and there is a contingent of conservative leaning retirees.

I'll take your word for it and take it as good news because it's a beautiful part of the country.

Those islands are really what I’m trying to avoid. I know that every state has them - But sometimes their affect on the rest of the state is clearly too much.

In PA, for example, this ENTIRE state is a conservative paradise. It’s Philly and Pitt that throw everything off.

If NC has some art/college towns (Like New Hampshire does) than it’s not to bad. If they have blue voting towns (Which are usually such bad cities and towns that everything fits into two categories “will get raped/will rape you” then you’ve found one of those)

I mean people may not have an exact idea of how bad Pitt and Philly are. These are utter warzones. Gangster Rap is like a fine baroque chamber passage when compared to how bad these places are. These are like east african bad.

Tennessee is much of the same. It’s a beautiful state. And it needs those Tennesseeans to arm up and chase everyone out from the cities. Everyone. Just flush the toilet and drain the swamp.

compare two states: Colorado and Pennsylvania. I’ve lived in both, and love both. Colorado is FULL of democrats that do more damage at the polls than a nuclear bomb. But PA’s democrat areas breed violent, ULTRA VIOLENT criminals and degenerates that make it like a ring of hell. Colorado doesn’t have “Oh, don’t go there” regions like PA does. But the Colorado dems do more to screw with the american way of life than a 3 year long EMP black out.

Asheville, I get the idea, is a lot like the Colorado liberal areas. A bunch of hippies who line up to vote from communism wherever it is up for vote. I can live near these places.

But Philly don’t give a sh!t about no votin no how. They will take the train or bus or wherever and just start chimping out in the suburbs. They are a dangerous, dangerous lot.

I’m in NEPA. I love it here. My wife doesn’t care for the weather, but it’s not enough to make us move. The homeschooling is what has got us. I’ll live in a box under a bridge if it means I can gain control of what my daughter is exposed to, and if the police won’t come around because I teach her that homosexuality is wrong.

I hate the state. And I will be DAMNED if the state is going to approve what I teach my family.

My once very conservative little town in NJ has gone far left -— because of New Yorkers moving in. Good schools here and rail service to the city attracted them. Sad for us.

We looked at Asheville back in 1999, and soon discovered it is very liberal.

Central North Carolina is flat and boring. Eastern NC leans blue due to NE libs moving into the Raleigh and surrounding cities.

Instead, we bought 1.67 acres of lake-front property in SouthPointe, a private community, on a cul-de-sac on Lake James. Five years later we built a 4,000 sf house, gazebo, and dock. Since the Lake is fed by a river and two streams from the Blue Ridge mountains, it is one of the cleanest lakes in the country.

As for firearms, fill out a form, take a test, shoot a box of ammo at a target, and a month later you'll have a concealed carry weapons permit. With a CCW, you can legally buy as much as you want and walk out the door the same day.

“Still no hunting allowed with autoloaders in PA?”

They recently lifted the ban on magazines holding over 3 rounds.

Poaching is a big deal up here. Hunting is a major part of the Pennsylvanian revenue, and our hunting lands are globally recognized.

The game wardens here are the highest authority in the state. I once got pulled over and had a bow in my trunk outside of bow season - they circumnavigated my ass for an hour on that one. I got in a lot of trouble and caught an earlashing from one of the scariest cops I’ve ever met.

I live in Raleigh. Asheville is a liberal, hippie area comparable to Chapel Hill. Raleigh is so sprawling that it balances better than Charlotte where a son lives. Johnston county just outside Raleigh is conservative as is much of the unincorporated areas of Raleigh. Apex outside Realeigh has lots of conservatives who homeschool. Cary is liberal transplants from the north.

The mountains (outside of the Asheville area) are fairly conservative. We chose Raleigh because we are just over 2 hours to the mountains or ocean.

A LOT depends on your intended lifestyle and budget.

Look in western NC for BEAUTIFUL country and low prices. West of Asheville (the place would drive you nuts as a conservative to live there.) Look along Highway 74 from Waynesville west towards Tennessee, and down towards Franklin <— presumes you prefer the smokey mountain type of experience. You can get mountainside, creek-side, pastureland and ‘suburbia’. You make the call. And LOW costs.

Otherwise look in the far eastern sections as mentioned.

well north of Charlotte city, but still in the burbs is nice.

Black Mountain (a real place) east of Asheville is the town where One Second After was set. THAT is a beautiful area.

Visit Asheville, but don’t live there.

We have a place near Fish hawk mountain between Franklin and Highlands.

NW Florida has a lot of Yankees moving in but they generally fit right in with the locals. Many of them are retired military.

The South Mountains are beautiful, sort of off to themselves. Some unusual flora. I have an aunt who lives in Connelly Springs, we’ve been to the state park many times.

I got an e-mail frim my friend who now lives in Eastern North Carolina here it is;
Tom, The western part of the state is very liberal. Well beyond the 50-50 he states.

The eastern part of the state is very conservative (where I live and volunteer for the GOP HQs)

The western side of NC geographically is probably a lot more like PA. It is more urban and has hills and mountains. The winters can be quite cold and stormy. Many citizens of the west have summer homes and yachts over here on the east coast.

The NC east coast is much more temperate. It's 70 and sunny here today. Cactus and some palm trees grow over here year round. We have had less than a 1/2" of snow this winter. The terrain is very flat. It is also very rural in the east. The beaches and ocean here is spectacular! 20 years ago this was hard core democrat (the old Dixie Democrats) but now conservatives rule. And our party is spreading west. Republicans control everything but the governorship and we'll get that back. I have also found that people over here are very friendly and respectful.

I hope this helps a little bit Tom.

New Bern, NC. Oriental, Beaufort, Emerald Isle, Swansboro, Jacksonville, etc., etc. Eastern NC is God’s county, and it’s conservative, filled with fishermen and retired military. Locals are friendly, hard working and helpful. Arts community is blooming. Lots of unspoiled nature due to the many military bases and parkland. Lots to do, with constant activities and festivals due to the great people moving here who are generous with their time and money.
