After Tragic Dog Death, Grieving Owner Warns Others About Aquatic Center

WEST TOWN — During a swimming lesson at a canine aquatic center in West Town, a dog drowned and his owner alleges her family's pet was not aided with CPR that could have saved the dog's life.

"What started as an exciting swimming lesson, ended in a tragedy and a traumatic experience that my family and I will never forget," said Paula Cano, a Maywood resident whose 3-year-old Doberman, Diego, died around 9:15 p.m. on March 31 at Doggy Paddle, 1330 W. Willow St.

Cano said Diego — who had never been in a swimming pool but enjoyed wading in the water at Montrose Beach — initially resisted, and that was her "first red flag" at the start of the lesson in a pool with Diego's "cousin" Piper, a boxer mix, who was with another instructor in the same pool.

Yes! Bongo tends to shred everything, but we’re planning on trying one anyway.

Our Golden swims like a rock, he sinks. And he came from great hunting lines. lol. Not only does he fail at swimming, he doesn’t retrieve either. Just a big old goofball who we love dearly.

Dogs are naturally buoyant, thus the term “dog paddle”.......Nobody has to teach a dog how to swim.....sheesh!

Our Dobie/Shepherd mix, Sasha, is deathly afraid of deep water. She loves playing in sprinklers and getting sprayed with a hose, but she cowers whenever she gets too near the pool.

Not sure if she could have swum, but her first pool adventure induced PTSD. When we moved, our young daughter threw a ball and Sasha ran across the pool to get it. She made it to the edge quickly enough, and I pulled her out, but the damage was done. Pools=bad.

My Irish Setter could swim better than me. I thought all dogs were like that.

"I’m only appreciated by a certain, courageous type of man..."

Ahhhhh... {{{sigh}}}

If only I was still possessed of that mettle, pluck and prowess that formed my intrepid (if somewhat reckless) youth.

Oh, trust me - my mind and spirit are still on The Quest.
And my lance is held at the ready for the test.

But I find myself in need of a Sancho Panza to help me
having traded my steed for a walker
and my armor for various trusses.

A lot of thought goes into their names.

I had 2 basenjis I got around the time of the Rawandan mess... named them "panga" and "kisu", Swahili for machete and knife. Fine, dark humor.
