SYRACUSE Why have sightings of unidentified flying objects around the nation more than tripled since 2001? Why is July the busiest month for U.F.O. sightings? Why did they spike in Texas in 2008, or in New Mexico in September 2015?
And how in the world, or out of it, has Manhattan racked up New York States second-highest tally of U.F.O. sightings in this century?
These questions and many others emerge from the first comprehensive statistical summary of so-called close encounters: 121,036 eyewitness accounts, organized county by county in each state and the District of Columbia, from 2001 to 2015.

It is the reference U.F.O. researchers dreamed of having, Gordon G. Spear, emeritus professor of physics and astronomy at Sonoma State University in California, writes in the foreword.
The book contains no narrative or anecdotal accounts, just 371 pages of charts and graphs that slice and dice the geography and timing of the incidents and the various shapes that witnesses reported: flying circles, spheres, triangles, discs, ovals, cigars.
Quix would have loved this thread.
Should prove useful to Russia and China as they investigate our aerospace defense projects.
I’ve witnessed several strange things here on the farm over the past few years. The one that really shook me up was a VERY bright light over our woods, about 500 yards from our house.Middle of winter,no leaves on the trees,I could see every small branch on the trees below the light. No noise either, dead silence.I watched it for maybe 2 minutes,I ran into the house to get my binoculars and when I got back it was gone.
I expect that this part of the story is going to get the most number of comments;) Berry Berry Weird.

She (Cheryl) came to the collaboration roundabout, having served as a cable lineman in the Air Force in Vietnam, and afterward in the Navys submarine service, as a man before undergoing gender-reassignment surgery in the 1980s. Ordained as a Buddhist nun, she was running a theater group in Maryland when she met Linda. They wed in 2011.

I wonder how many FReepers have seen what they believe to be a bona fide UFO and are willing to admit it?
I have, as a child, during a supposed UFO “outbreak” locally. My parents were building a house out in the country at the foot of a mountain. Dad and a few friends were laying stone on the fireplace, mom and I drove up with dinner for them, cold weather. It seemingly followed our car, I saw it first. Mom didn’t believe it but then she saw it and said yes it is following us. So, she drove the rest of the way pretty quickly, it disappeared when we turned into the drive.
Alien carpet munching.
A book about Valerie Jarret?
“It was a lineman for the Army....”
No photos of them. With everyone just about having a camera, where are the photos??
See my post #6 LOL!!
Aurora borealis effects?
They just assembled the numbers, locations and shapes for charting. Not sure of the time period - but observers probably did not have cameras.
You have a great idea for a future publication now that most people have camera phones.
Never mind the photos. I took one of the best UFO shots ever with a Polaroid at 11 years old by throwing a garbage can lid into the air.
Let’s see some actual physical evidence. Just one piece!
I’m sure Bill Nye is on it.
Stupid me - the article clearly states from 2001 !!!!!
Seems like there should be some camera shots to review.
Thx, sod
If I’m like most people, the fact that I have a pretty decent camera in my phone doesn’t dawn on me at the spur of the moment. We had some weird weather phenomena here a few years back with extreme cold, steam from the power plant at the lake was building up and just staying there, it eventually looked like a big storm cloud and it started snowing out of it, with rime ice and ice crystals all over everything. I drove through it a couple of times because I didn’t believe what people were saying. It was surreal, I wish I’d gotten some photos, especially when the sun broke through occasionally. Had my cell phone with me, even received a few calls, but didn’t think to take photos with it.
True - especially if you are in a panic or mesmerized by a strange apparition.
