Princess Diana: How she has been remembered 20 years after her death
Fox News ^ | August 31, 2017

Diana died on Aug. 31, 1997, after she was in a car crash which killed her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and the couple’s driver, Henri Paul. Her funeral at Westminster Abbey in London was reportedly watched by 2.5 billion people worldwide.

The princess left behind two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, who were 15 and 12 years old, respectively, at the time. Now in their 30s, they went to Kensington Palace on Wednesday to visit a memorial garden for their late mother.

Here's how Diana has been remembered ahead of the 20th anniversary of her death.

Prince William and Prince Harry

Diana’s two children participated in a BBC documentary, “Diana, 7 Days,” which will premiere on NBC on Sept. 1 and looks at the week after their mother’s death.

“I couldn’t understand why everyone wanted to cry as loud as they did and show such emotion as they did when they didn't really know our mother,” William said in the program, admitting that he sometimes felt protective about it.

He said that “looking back over the last few years I’ve learned to understand what it was that she gave the world and what she gave a lot of people.”

The two princes also participated in “Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy,” which premiered on HBO in the U.S. in July.

It was honestly the first time that people seriously went overboard, and it turned into an international media spectacle.

Thank goodness there was no social media back then.

I remember my reaction at the time was shock. I said to my British husband (who could not have cared less) that I realized people died in car crashes, but not usually people like her. Diana was a young, naive brood mare for the heir and the spare. I believe she was actually in love with Charles, but found out about his mistress before the wedding. She didn’t feel she could cancel the wedding and extracted a promise that the physical relationship was over. He lied. She didn’t see any way out and started having affairs of her own. What a mess that marriage was! What a mess her life was! No, Diana wasn’t blameless and Diana was really manipulative. I have always had respect for the Queen, who has tried her best to keep dignity in the monarchy. Charles is a prig. I know he will be King, as long as he outlasts his mother. But thankfully his tenure should be short. I think the biggest misfortune in the whole mess is the fact that those two young guys lost their mother as such early ages. They seem to be pretty good people. I look forward to seeing William and Kate in the palace.

I remember that it overshadowed Mother Theresa’s death.

Yes, and it was very upsetting and wrong.

It was nothing compared to the run-up to her marrying Prince Charles, it was all we heard about for months.

You give too much credit to William, Kate & Harry.

She did lots of living.

I wasn’t a fan, but no child deserves to see their mother beat up like that woman was. No one could take that pressure.

“...this chick was nuts”

She was driven nuts by the royal family.

I remember the event well and was glued to cable news for hours with live coverage. It was the best live TV I experienced since the O.J. freeway jam several years before. By the next morning I concluded that she had been killed and that the Brit services were the likely parties. Of course back then it was a bit early to connect the moslem angle to motive but in retrospect, I think the Royals felt it had to be done. I do wonder what happened to the Merc 500 they died in. At least O.J.’s Bronco is still road worthy. It would be fascinating to see them both auctioned at Barrett-Jackson or Mecum’s or some such to see which would bring more.

About ten years ago I was talking with a Catholic Priest who told me there was no way the Catholic Church was going to let her marry a Muslim.

And yet, she wasn't Catholic. So...

That same Mercedes was in a previous accident where it flipped over and was wrecked. It was repaired and sold to the Limo service who owned it at the time of Diana’s death.

She was a lovely, stylish lady. Too bad she got tangled up with the world’s most dysfunctional family, the Windsors.

I recall going in to work and hearing all of the young’ish women all upset by this. I am neither young’ish or a woman...

I think I pissed some folks off when I asked, sincerely, why this mattered to anyone but her family?

The outcry completely weirded me out. It seemed to me at the time completely bizarre, unnatural and unhealthy, not to mention a bit embarrassing for the Western world, IMO.

I think so, too, Cecily. And she was a loving mother. RIP, Diana.

She was married to Charles when she was only 20 years old. I checked her educational background. It seems to be girl's finishing schools. It might be that the Windsors thought they could cultivate Diana Spencer to be their perfect pet.

About ten years ago, there was a Princess Diana exhibit that travelled to various museums. It was put together by her brother. It exuded his love for her. There was a lot about Diana's good intentions and her passion for her various charities.

After seeing that exhibit, I can't criticize her. She was in a position that didn't suit her. She behaved in a way that showed a lack of maturity or commitment to the role she accepted.

It’s the ultimate fake-news story. Must be a really slow news day. No hurricanes, no explosions, no terrorist killings, no totalitarian regime ICBM launches ....

Pretty much it. She’s nothing special, as a matter of fact, I’ve had considerably better myself.
