Two women at Dragon Con hit by chairs thrown from hotel balcony
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | Sept. 4, 2017 | Ellen Eldridge

Two women who attended Dragon Con in Atlanta are recovering from head injuries after they were hit by chairs thrown from a hotel balcony Sunday morning.

Two chairs were tossed from the 10th floor of Marriott Marquis hotel in downtown Atlanta about 1:40 a.m., Atlanta police spokesman Sgt. John Chafee told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. That floor had a terrace area from which chairs could have been thrown so police said they do not believe the chairs came from a guest’s room, Officer carlos Campos said.

...

McDaniel thinks her Loki costume from the “Avengers” movies helped lessen the blow from the chair.

"I really think that saved my life," she said.

...

Jamie Temple-Thompson Amador, who was dressed as Jessica Rabbit from the movie “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” was rushed to Wellstar Atlanta Medical Hospital, friend Jennifer Matteson told The AJC.

...

All in all, Matteson said their experience was still positive from the “phenomenal” hotel hospitality to the community.

“The love and support from the Dragon Con family is heart warming to say the least,” Matteson said. “We can't wait to return for an even better experience, and reconnect with our new Atlanta family!”

But Lee Satterfield had a different impression. He watched the commotion afterward and said he’s feared incidents like this because he believes Dragon Con is unorganized.

“No one there knows what they're doing,” he said.

...

An official police investigation is ongoing and anyone with video or information should contact the Atlanta Police Department.

Tipsters can remain anonymous and be eligible for rewards of up to $2,000 via Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477, text information to 274637 or visit crimestoppersatlanta.org.

Was your previous post pulled because of a banned source?

Anyway, I’m glad the ladies will be okay. What a weird thing to happen! It hardly seems fair to blame the DragonCon producers for chairs thrown from a hotel balcony. That can happen at any event where a lot of people are going to get drunk.

Drunken stupidity at its worst.

Prayers for a fast recovery to the revelers.

77,000 attendees. That’s a lot of people partying!

Yes, that is a large group, although not compared to total attendance at a major sporting event.

As tight as DragonCon was years ago, I lost interest in going. The crowds were insane.

77k people in that area, no thanks.

I had the exact same question.

Apparently its one of those things were people dress up in homemade superhero costumes.

Something that was enjoyable maybe 15 years ago for sci-fi and fantasy fans.

Now it’s huge crowds crammed into downtown Atlanta.

Like Comic-Con but in Atlanta instead of San Diego.

Was the Keith Moon cos-player brought in for questioning?

When we got to the observation platform, the chair wasn’t there. I looked over the railing and saw it half-sunk in the wetlands below.

Could it have been the result of wind?

A yearly Atlanta convention where folks that like fantasy/sci-fi/action/horror/mystery films, comics, novels, and games can dress up in costumes (or not) and hang out with one another and their favorite celebrities of the same. Vey much like Comicon, though not as well known, perhaps. Though I think at one time they were comparable in attendance and prestige.

No. There was a solid railing all around.

Yes, that is a large group, although not compared to total attendance at a major sporting event.

Of which ATL hosted two of those this weekend at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium with football game Sat. & tonight. I stayed at that hotel for a convention that coincided with the SEC Conference football championship game in 2005. The place was filled with Arkansas Razorbacks and the sounds of "sooooo-eeee Pig! - Razorbacks!" echoed up the atrium.

Interestingly, I think this year’s DragonCon had the same attendance as Burning Man. And over the same weekend, too. DragonCon has been going on for decades. Burning Man is newer (and more hip, I suppose) by comparison.

Ok, I just wondered. Sometimes I think the Offspring have flung items about the yard, when it was actually the wind.
