DNA Testing and Privacy (Behind the scenes at the 23andMe Lab) - Smarter Every Day 176 (VIDEO)

A special thanks to Dr. Neil Lamb at the Hudson Alpha Institute for Biotechnology. A major mission of Hudson Alpha is to educate the public and promote genomics literacy. I talked to many scientists about Genotyping but Dr. Lamb's ability to break down the complexity of the human genome is what finally brought it home for me.

-----

I was concerned about what actually happens with my genetic information when submitted to 23andMe, so when they approached me and asked me if I wanted to make a video I decided to investigate it top to bottom. Visiting the Lab and learning that their data is contractually isolated from the sample and the fact that it's not the entire DNA sequence being sent to 23andMe headquarters passed my smell test and satisfied my privacy concerns. My wife spoke with professors and industry leaders from around the country and learned about the benefits of a future of medicine based on genomics. My wife, Dr. Lamb, and 23andMe all independently stressed the importance of understanding exactly what the results of the health genotype testing mean by consulting your (well informed) doctor. In a nutshell, the results don't provide deterministic results, but a probabilistic indicator based on historical data. Many other factors play a huge role in how your body works.

“Smell test”?
I guess you can’t always know how genuine someone is really meaning to be, and it’s probably wrong of me to comment without reading the whole article, but just from the expert this seems like a puff piece at best and propaganda more likely. Just like many advertisements try to convince you of something that is almost exactly the opposite of what is true (used car commercials always say they are not high pressure why? Because they usually pressure you), this doesn’t seem to pass the smell test to me. In fact, it makes me even more suspicious.

If Rumba is actually going to make money by selling information as inane and trivial as your house’s floorplan, can you even imagine the power of large-scale genetic data?

That company is founded by the wife of one of the two Google Founders and if you trust anyone associated with that group then you’re crazy Stark raving mad.

how are they able to keep costs so low..?

because their other in income stream is from selling your sequences to drug companies.

Why was this video even made..?

because so many people have worries about that company..!

I’ve been thinking about getting a DNA report but wondered about how the various companies compare as to cost, reputation, findings, etc.

Anyone have any information personally?

Only indirectly. My mother had hers done and the results were less that stellar.

They even had the 93% eastern european, as 7% eskimo. It made little sense.
A cousin took it and his eastern european percentages were way less than the 25% they should have been if you get equal genetic info from each parent.
We also wondered if they made inferences based on the bio info you provide.

My mother is pushing 90 so who cares who has her dna but I care about mine or the possibility of linking hers to mine so I have not done it.

I MAY try to simply provide anonymous data when I sign up because i AM curious...Just because they have an adress doesn’t mean a thing...and I could send it to a po box.

Same here. There are avid genealogists in both my mother’s family and my father’s family. I know my ancestry going back about 500 years, and that’s good enough for me.

I had my DNA done thru 23andme. 89% Southern Italy. No surprise there I was worried that I would have some Middle East ancestry that I didn't know about.

I have a good black friend whotold me that several white back for many generations friends of hers have been told by the DNA people they have black ancestors...

she said that many cant all have African families..

I think someone was playing a stupid game with them...

Ancestry wont change their “paper” records when they are wrong...I wouldn’t trust them to do DNA...

most reputable hereditary societies wont accept records from Ancestry for proofs for membership as they don’t source their info and have blatant errors...

I’ve never had my DNA done...

When dealing with the US Department of State they required AABB Accredited Relationship (DNA) Testing Facilities.

http://www.aabb.org/sa/facilities/Pages/RTestAccrFac.aspx

Here is a Lab listing:

http://www.aabb.org/sa/facilities/Documents/AABB-Accredited-DNA-Testing-Facilities.pdf

I used the one out of San Antonio, easily done thru the mail. However, if you need it done officially, most like the requiring agency will have to take the DNA samples (which the Lab is fully prepared to support).

So when my daughter is old enough I am going to provide her the DNA results so that she can be clinically assured to 99.9999999999% who are her parents.

I had my dna tested by another company...they missed my heritage so completely it was amazing...I know my heritage going back a few generations and the country my mom, grandfather, great grandfather came from wasn’t even on the list. My dad’s family all came from England...they missed that completely, too

This shows what a joke those companies are.

No way in heck would I trust the company. Or any of those companies. I know who my family is. I’m the genealogist in the family and have us back to the 1500s. I’d send in the dog’s slobber before sending in mine for testing.

I can’t stand their commercials. Wow, they determined a black person had African ancestors! Who’da thunk?!? Wow, a person with high cheekbones and black hair is Native American! Wow, a dumpy round faced person with brown skin has Hispanic ancestors! And that guy who traded in his lederhosen for a kilt might want to dig his lederhosen out of the trash as his ancestors likely traveled from Scotland to Germany and then to the New World.

The second link was disabled. I’m not as interested in finding out who my parents are or leaving a report for my kids as I am getting the whole nine yards of my ancestors like the ones done by the Smithsonian and Ancestry.comm etc,. Does the SA lab do that?

Or did I misread your post. Thanks for the response.

Yes, I get it with your post. Southern Italy was settled by Celts from the north and Greeks from the south, but of course there were raids from other places. Glad you got the info you were seeking.

I share the same curiosity — I know the national origin of several great- and great-greats, but I also know their nations were subject to raids in ancient times— one or two towns in particular— and I’d like to know about what lies beneath the label, so to speak.

As an example (not me), there are now a lot of Arabs and Africans who are born in UK and are British citizens; but their descendants would probably want to know more.
