Apple Fans Missing For iPhone 8 Release Day
CBS - LA ^ | September 22, 2017 7:43 AM | Staff

PASADENA (CBSLA) — There was something missing at Pasadena’s Apple Store for the Friday release of the iPhone 8 – a line of eager fans.

Previous releases of the iPhone attracted hundreds of Apple fans waiting in the early morning hours at several stores across Southern California.

The Apple Store has a ticketing system, but that never stopped eager iPhone fans from camping out overnight.

But on Friday morning, all was quiet on Colorado Boulevard, except for employees inside the store handing out tickets.

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus touts new features like wireless charging, new camera features, and a faster processor.

The lack of a line may be due to more people waiting for the November release of the iPhone X, which has a more drastic redesign.

The updated Apple Watch and Apple TV also went on sale Friday.

Google “os 11 battery issues” that will provide you an answer.

Oh, awesome!

As much as I b*tch about, ‘The People’s Republik of Madistan’ it was always (and still is) a great venue for bands.

In my youth I got to see all the up and coming bands of the time: ZZ Top, Genesis, Steve Miller Band (Hometown Boy Makes Good!) Heart, Nazareth, The Cars, Pablo Cruise, Cheap Trick, Van Halen, U2, etc.

Good Times. ;)

I have a 5s. Am planning on upgrading. Ain’t getting the X. If I’m gonna drop a grand would rather get a mac air

I had a flip phone until a relative gave me their used 5s for a Bday gift about a year and a half ago. The screen could be a bit bigger, but for what I do it is just fine. It has a 8mp camera. Being a tight wad I'll wait until the phone fails or Apple quits supporting it. I just upgraded it to IOS 11 yesterday, so it should be good to go for another year.

I use a 5-year old iPhone 5 as my personal smartphone. I, like most Apple users, don’t update hardware every year — Apple is constantly updating their software (including for “old” iPhones) and adding improved and new capabilities.

The latest software update (iOS 11) released this month is too much for my old iPhone’s hardware to handle. So it’s time for House Atreides to get a new iPhone. But I’m not getting the iPhone 8; I can wait until next month to get the iPhone X since I plan to keep it a long time.

And, by the way, the iPhone 8 isn’t a minor update - it has substantial improvements and new capabilities beyond those in the iPhone 7.

They somehow went from a business model of making a product that was simple and intuitive to a business model of making an overly-complex, privacy-invading, crap-filled product they force down the customer’s throat, where the customer is always wrong and they are always right.

They might just be returning to their roots with this behavior. My first computer was an Apple IIc, which I used for almost a decade. Sure got old needing the Apple (think 3x the cost of comparable PC components) version of everything, right down to printer cables, joysticks, etc. When I finally upgraded to a mighty 486 in the early 90s, it was like being let out of jail. That said, Apple built good equipment back in the day; I pulled that old IIc out of my shed a couple years ago and it still booted and ran the programs I loaded. It's pretty wild to think that an old computer can survive decades in a shed that fluctuates between freezing and 100+ degrees, and I'm amazed by the floppies not degrading.

It would be nice to see a true open source phone OS not run by one of the big tech companies. Big tech is just as injurious to liberty as big government. Apple sucks, but Goolag was only too happy to get in bed with the 0bamite leftist totalitarians.

Yes, and read the “problem”. It is the matter of updating your apps, of re-indexing your phone, etc. These are temporary. Once your apps are current, no problem. Heck, I had 50+ apps updating on my phone earlier this week, of course it drained the battery a bit. I don’t see any mention of other longer term problems, definitely nothing new.

The only reason I traded in my iPhone 6 for a 7 was that I actually ran out of memory. And I got a screamin’ Black Friday deal. But now my iPhone 7 has plenty of memory and I see absolutely no need to upgrade.

Ditto. Depending on reviews I may have to drop my 5s in the sink again. It survived the first attempt with minor degradation.

Still, I don’t know why people are bitching about THIS upgrade being small... all the iPhone upgrades have been small incremental improvements.

I'm a Samsung user, but its the same thing. I generally upgrade after about three or so new versions come out.

I have a 7, it was my first iphone and the only reason I have it was Verizon gave me a hell of a deal on it otherwise, I am comfortable with the android. I just won’t pay the high dollars Apple wants for their phones, they just are not worth it to me. I generally keep a phone until it dies, three or four years.

The news reports that there are no long lines at the Apple stores for the iPhone 8. There weren't long lines for the Apple 7 or 6S either. Apple has had on-line pre-ordering since the Apple 4S so that has essentially eliminated the long lines of the past at Apple Stores. . . yet iPhone 8 pre-orders in China alone were over 4 million. Now add that the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are not even Apple's 2017 flagship phone. That is reserved for the upcoming $999 iPhone X (ten) being released for pre-orders on October 27 for November 2nd. — PING!

Are Apple's Customers Passing on the iPhone 8?
No, They're Just Buying By Pre-Order.
Ping!

Apple has shown no real reason for people to fork over a thousand bucks for their latest version.

Uh, Red? The iPhone being released to the public today is not the $999 iPhone X, that iPhone won't be available to the public even for pre-order until October 27th, and for sale November 2nd. This iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus start at $699 and were available for pre-order since last Tuesday. . . and have had record pre-orders for deliveries today, four million in just China alone.

Surveys of the iPhone buyers' market—there's a pent up demand for more than 250 million users with older iPhones—show that more than 60% of those planning to buy a new iPhone are waiting for the iPhone X. That is not a sign of a saturated market.

Do you suppose that’s where MahaRushi is today?
Considering the death in the family (his aunt), I think it would be uncharitable to make that assumption.

Facial recognition scares me. I like the fact we can use it to catch the bad guys at events.

This facial recognition never leaves the iPhone and does not use an image. It does not work on a technology that would be usable at a distance such as would be required for use at an event.

The Apple technology uses an infrared system that projects scanning dot onto the face being presented and then measures the distances of several hundred dot scan returns, mapping a mathematical 3D representation of the user's individual face. It also assures that the eyes are open and looking at the iPhone. Such scans would never work at any appreciable distance.

This mathematical map is then stored in the "Secure Enclave" inside the iPhone's dedicated Encryption Engine processor which is not accessible to the iPhone's data processor which handles all Apps and other data. That data is not stored in a raw form but is stored as a one way HASH, which will be compared to a new one way HASH which is calculated each time a scan is done to see if it is within an acceptable range. Apparently the odds that any user's iPhone could be unlocked by a random person's face is 1 in 1,000,000. The previous gold standard for security, TouchID which read the subcutaneous ridges and valleys of fat under the fingertips, was only 1 in 50,000. Even Apple cannot access the encrypted data inside the "Secure Enclave" memory inside the Encryption Engine processor.

There is no data base of images being amassed by Apple for later use as some have alleged. There simply is no way for Apple to even access that data even if there were an image to collect. The fact is that everyone who has a state government drivers' license or ID card has already provided a digitized image for such such a database for facial identification at events. It is totally unnecessary for a business such as Apple to provide one for the government; they've already got one.

I highly agree with the concept of arresting people who wear masks in riots or demonstrations, or ARMOR, because they are there for the purpose of fomenting violence. . . but not when skiing, sky or skin diving, etc. In fact, most states have laws allowing those arrests but the Liberal pukes occupying the mayoral chairs in cities where those riots and demonstrations occurred have prohibited their police from making those arrests.
