Body Cam Video Shows Moment Indiana Officer Shoots at Actor Filming Robbery Scene
ktla ^ | October 3, 2017

The incident happened last week in the town of Crawfordsville when police responded to a 911 call about a robbery at Backstep Brewery on North Green Street, according to KTLA sister station WXIN in Indianapolis. The caller told dispatchers that a man in a ski mask entered the bar with a gun.

Sgt. Matt Schroeter arrived at the location and saw a man in a ski mask backing out the door. He appeared to be holding a weapon. The “robber” was actually actor Jim Duff, who was filming a scene for a movie.

But Schroeter didn’t know that.

“Drop the gun! Drop the gun now!” Schroeter yells in body camera footage released after the incident. Duff then turns toward the officer and takes off his mask; Schroeter fires a shot and repeats his orders for Duff to drop his weapon.

“We’re doing a movie!” Duff says after taking off the ski mask and dropping the weapon.

...

Police said neither the production company nor the bar owners told them that a movie was being shot in the area. It didn’t help that the other actors and filming equipment were inside the business, making it difficult to know that a movie was being shot.

A few years ago I saw a guy in an alley drawing a gun on someone as I was driven by by. Called the cops and was told it was a film set.

Can’t blame the officer

“Can’t blame the officer”

This is basic filmmaking 101. If you are filming with prop guns, you let the local police department know. Troopers with the 501st Legion (the Stormtroopers who do charity work) have had the police called on them because someone saw their WWII MG replicas.

And when the guy with the gun says drop the gun, you drop it without hesitation. Don’t turn around. Don’t try to explain your way out of it.

Meh, a LOT of stuff these days is filmed guerilla-style.

Some cities cheaply permit it and are super prompt to inquiries, flexible with scheduling, etc.

Other cities milk it for all it’s worth and are super slothe to respond to the associated calls and emails —it’s like the post-office.

So people throw up their hands and just shoot it, giving the cities nothing. Faster and cheaper, right..?

The equipment is soooooo much smaller and lighter, you can often escape heavy scrutiny. You can get away with it.

I think when LEO’s see this and actually understand, they pretend not to.

Goes better with the city manager and chief, that way.

“You’re sorry for me nearly SHOOTING you, huh...? Well are you going to at least PAY THE FEE you were trying to shirk...?”

A lot of cops are revenue agents.

Yeah, blare a lot of public safety stuff at me now.

The late Jerry Doyle related a story at a DragonCon.

He and some other actors were on a rooftop filming some action sequences and had prop guns.

It was past midnight and several laser sights were on them.

Nobody told the cops or residents. No shots fired.

Any respectable set manager filming a “crime scene” will contact local police, post a signage and have either an off duty officer or a security guard on the location, usually at the entrance.

Good thing this is one of the 80 percent of officers who miss their target when firing at suspected criminals.

This was the total fault of the entire group of film makers, crew, extras, etc. Any time a movie is being made, police have to be there, for traffic control, crowd control, and to keep things from getting out of hand.

Only effing arrogant Hollywood liberals can play cow boy and Indians...

Too bad the officer had to go through this, I would sue them.

Duff is lucky to be alive.

Pretty dumb to have people walking around in a ski mask and carrying a gun with letting the local LEO know about it.

Crawfordsville is a small town where all the cops will know each other as well. So when the actors are walking around in police uniforms they are likely to garner unwanted attention as well.

You call the venue and explain what you want to do at their location, how you want to know what their standard fee for the permit is:

“What is your budget...?”

Innocent question, huh...? Look only a friggin DUFUS would answer that.

If you give them a number —ANY NUMBER— what are they then going to claim..?

“Ah, three grand, huh..? Kay...(brief sound of a few papers rustling)...yeah, sez here our standard fee for that is $2,900..”

See how it works..?

The first person to say a number LOSES.

And THAT is why so much stuff gets shot guerrilla-style these days.

“Well, when I see 5 weirdos dressed in togas stabbing a guy in the middle of the park in full view of 100 people, I shoot the bastards. That’s my policy.” I love that scene.

Exactly what must happen in our city, and has happened. I’ve seen the signs, know the police.
