The Crown has so far taken no prisoners when it comes to depicting the secret life of the Royals, from the blazing arguments between the newlywed Queen and Prince Philip to the love life of Princess Margaret.
Next series, it is to go one step further: exploring the relationship between the Windsors and the Nazi party.
The Crown, the Netflix drama, will dedicate one future episode to the Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor, and his dealings with the Nazis, in scenes set after he abdicated the throne to live in virtual exile.
Robert Lacey, historian and author of the shows companion book, said the second series would embrace the difficult topic of how close the Duke came to figures within the party, exploring the subtle points of European politics and royalty.
The Dukes memory has long been tainted by his association with the Nazis, with photographs of him making a "heil Hitler" salute.

Considering that Edward VIII the king that abdicated aided the NAZI’s that is appropriate.
How much “aid” can an abdicated king give?
You think he was like 007?
“How much aid can an abdicated king give?”
When the war started the princes and princesses became officers in the army and Royal Navy. Edward was, I think a General. Elizabeth was a mechanic in in a logistics unit. He could have given quite a bit of sensitive information. Another of the princes they think tried to fly a plane to Germany to start secret peace negotiations.
After they get done with him, maybe they should investigate Joseph Kennedy.
The Crown is a very well done series. Very much worth watching.
Wasn’t he shoved off to Governorship of Bermuda or something? It was pretty well known that he had Nazi sympathies before the war. MeThinks the Royal family put him in a place and position where he could do the least amount of damage.
He was no longer governor of the Bahamas by the start of the war. He and Wallace Simpson were living in Paris at the start of the war.
Like republicans wanting to cross the aisle to be friends with the democrat.
Here is the chronology.
Yes, the Duke of Windsor was living in Paris at the start of the war. He almost immediately volunteered for active service as a retired Army officer, probably in part because he thought it might help rehabilitate his image in England, but he may have also felt some sense of duty, and was appointed as a Major-General (as King he had been a Field Marshal, so this was technically a demotion) but as the highest rank he'd genuinely held (as opposed to one given solely because of his royal status) was Captain/Temporary Major during the First World War, it was a considerable promotion. He was appointed to serve on the British Staff in France, and it was at this time, some people suspected he may have leaked material to the Germans - personally I'm inclined to doubt it. It would have been treason and whatever his sympathies, that's a very serious accusation. Regardless, he was pretty useless as an officer (he didn't have the experience to match his rank) and it was for that reason, in May 1940, he was appointed Governor of the Bahamas. Basically to get him out of the way without overtly disgracing him.
Thanks.
Considering I was remembering what I read 30 years ago I did pretty well.
That was my memory based on the Churchill biography. Thanks
