Consumer Reports refuses to recommend Microsoft Surface Book 2 (before they evaluate it!?!?)
BetaNews ^ | Oct 20, 2017 | Mark Wycislik-Wilson

Just a few days ago, Microsoft revealed details of the Surface Book 2 which is due to launch in November. But before the device is even available, it has been dealt a blow by Consumer Reports.

Earlier in the year, the review group said that problems with reliability meant that it was impossible for it to recommend any Microsoft laptop or tablet. Now Consumer Reports says that this extends to the Surface Book 2, meaning that the device will not be recommended.

While hardly the end of the world for Microsoft, this will still come as bad news. The company expressed disappointment in Consumer Reports' original decision, saying: "We don't believe these findings accurately reflect Surface owners' true experiences or capture the performance and reliability improvements made with every Surface generation."

Microsoft is likely to be similarly disappointed with Consumer Reports' statement about the Surface Book 2. Speaking to Benzinga, Consumer Reports' spokesperson James McQueen said:

We will evaluate the performance of the Microsoft Surface Book 2 once we get it into our labs next month for testing, but we will not be able to recommend it. Our decision to withhold our recommendation of all Microsoft laptops and tablets is still in effect.

It looks as though Microsoft has an uphill battle on its hands.

They haven't gotten a single unit in their hands yet, but they've already dinged it. WTF??

It is Windows 10S — the “S” stands for “Sh!t.”

They are right — no point in even evaluating a platform with no software that can run on it.

I bought a SB, saw Win 10S, then immediately shipped it back. Had I known about 10S, I would not have even bought it.

10S makes it a $2K doorstop.

Consumer Reports?

What about other with-it magazines like The Saturday Evening Post and The Police Gazette?

I thought they were giving away free upgrades to Win10Pro.

I haven’t paid any attention to the idiots at Consumer Reports for decades. I couldn’t have told whether they even still exist.

hahaha!! yes, I’ll spend that money to get those whiz-bang magazines with my new doorstop!

Anything with 10 - my new dell pc pre-loaded with 8.0 upgraded poorly to 10 is sitting in the garage with a busted power supply after trying for 30 hours to connect to the network...

>>I thought they were giving away free upgrades to Win10Pro.<<

They didn’t offer that to me — it was a $200 option. Best Buy is offering the free upgrade.

Can you imagine buying a car with no wheels but the dealer offering you a free upgrade of 4 wheels but you have to install them yourself?

That is how stupid it is shipping with 10S and not just shopping Pro.

MS needs to be punished — and badly — for even CONSIDERING 10S. They are not Android nor Apple and they never will be. The MS App store will always be a quaint place where you can get stuff that screws up your computer.

I agree with C/S — don’t even waste time buying it nor evaluating it.

Maybe this will help. It’s a limited time offer which is pretty stupid.

Assuming it comes with Windows 10, I wouldn’t recommend it either. </snark>

Not my point — my point is the very existence of 10S is a sin and the MS equivalent to taking a knee - they don’t understand their customer base and they have HUGELY overblown perceptions of their application desert (aka App Store).

They must be punished badly. People need to lose their jobs and never allowed to be nearer to technology than washing cars. Everyone that has anything to do with the creation of 10S should be made to watch nonstop “ellen” and “the view” episodes like in Clockwork Orange. Then they should be put in stocks in the public square and pelted with the old 5.25” disks.

LOL

I dunno, Consumer Reports has not generally been kind to Apple either. If Swordmaker is moonlighting at CR, he's not exactly doing a bang-up job. :-)

CR has become irrelevant to me. Now I am wondering if they were ever reliable, or if I merely fell for their marketing hype.

If I was responsible for someone else’s computer I’d consider it. When it first came out it was aimed at schools, libraries, and stupid people. There are a large number of people who do nothing more than Facebook, Gamble, and Porn.

10s may be an affront to you, but there is some merit to it. MS needs to keep it Internet Computer realm like Chromebook.

Idiots they are, indeed. The magazine has become a New Age, global warming advocating, pro-obamacare, comic book which has strayed far from its original mission. Greatly reduced textual content with a leftist slant, lots of full page photos as filler. The left fouls everything they touch.

I find myself agreeing with you IJAO. A low-end, store-tied, severely limited operating system can be a blessing to folks who only run a few standardized applications. They typically do NOT want to expand it, they do NOT want to know how it works.

They are the complete antithesis of my own preferences, but no matter -- they comprise a significant portion of the available customer base.

My only problem with 10S is that it should not be the default SKU. 10S should be a "lower-cost option" to knock a few bucks off the standard price. The real, complete computer should be the default product.

But then, I'm not a Microsoft Marketing Genius...
