Thanksgiving travelers to stuff I-15 with up to 45-minute delays

Early Thanksgiving travelers are expected to stuff Interstate 15 with heavy traffic and delays this week.

The Utah Department of Transportation is predicting heavy delays — of up to 45 minutes — on Interstate 15 along the Wasatch Front during the evening commute on Wednesday, as many people head out of town or escape from work a bit early for the holiday.

UDOT said its engineers expect a 25 percent increase in traffic on both Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, compared to a typical weekday commute of about 200,000 cars per day.

It expects heavier than normal traffic on Tuesday from noon to 9 p.m., and on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. UDOT recommends leaving early in the day or late in the evening to help reduce congestion.

The delays are expected even though UDOT just opened — or is about to open — several projects in time for Thanksgiving and Black Friday shopping.

For example, on Monday it finished its Interstate 215 west belt reconstruction; on Saturday it opened a new extension of the Mountain View Corridor from 5400 South to 4100 South; and Sunday opened a new interchange at 7000 South and Bangerter Highway.

Two more key projects statewide are scheduled to open by Wednesday: a new I-15 interchange at 10600 South in Sandy and new lanes and rebuilt bridges on I-15 in St. George from Brigham Road to Dixie Drive.

I’d beg for 45 minutes of traffic.

Maximum throughput is ~ 30 mph.

In crowded conditions, I try for that to help ease the congestion behind me, but I doubt that it works for long.

Everyone should put green see-thru tape over their headlights.

That would make traffic so much more Christmas-y!

nice idea.

Off topic, but have the liberals handed out their Thanksgiving dinner talking points, so the self important liberals can lecture their less enlightened relatives about the failings of Trump? I recall they issued talking points in past years around the holidays, so they could educate their relatives about the affordable care act and other great achievements of Obama.

Doing the same thing two years in a row might constitute a ritual or, dare I say, tradition.

So, so antithetical to liberalism!

I always dread the drive between Provo and Ogden on I-15. I now plan my trips so I pass through there on a Sunday.

I doubt anyone in that pic is doing 30. Good enough reason for me to stay home.

I applaud the state officials for pointing this out. At least they are aware. Will there be more Troopers on duty to deal with problems?

Can’t escape the feeling that many others will “leave” sooner to beat the crunch, thereby making the crunch worse.

These people should spend an average day on I-95 around the DC metro.
