'Never look bored... even if you are': Vintage dating guide
Daily Mail ^ | 5 December 2017 | Hana Carter

Posted on 12/05/2017 11:13:26 AM PST by mairdie

The illustrated guide, which was published by Click Parade magazine in the US in 1938 and recently resurfaced online, includes a string of warnings modern girls would baulk at; from minimising their alcohol intake to always looking interested - even if their date's chat is less than scintillating.

Ladies wishing to touch up their make-up were also warned never to do in front of a man - only in private - and urged not to make conversation on the dancefloor.

Read on for more 'tips' that will make you thankful you're on the dating scene in 2017.

As a 55 year old divorced, single male I can factually tell you that trying to date ANY woman and treat her like a lady is a complete and total exercise in futility.

Divorced at 52; now 75. Tried a few dates and gave it up. The women either had an “attitude” or were looking for a meal ticket. ....Transport me back to the ‘60s-’70s!

My daughter is 53. Lots of attractive and available ladies in that age group!

Yes there are lots of attractive women (note: I'm not using the term "ladies" here...) and their status may be "available" however they're not looking for a meaningful relationship.

Most of the women I meet are in deep financial doo-doo, struggling to stay afloat and basically looking for someone to rescue them from their situation.

In the past year, I've only met two women who had their stuff together, were financially independent, able to stand on their own, had good careers and as best I could tell were emotionally available. One is a neo-natal nurse who has her Masters Degree and is a nursing professor at a university well known for its nursing program, the other runs an oncology program at a major hospital in Chicago and has her PHD. Both are attractive, very smart, stand on their own, don't "need" anyone but would like someone in their life. Both also really like their careers and want their relationships to fit in the time available (read that: "left over") from when they're not busy working.

I have my days where I just want to throw in the towel and give up. I also have my days where I think to myself "God didn't make us to be alone..." and I keep trying. I'm thinking I'm taking a break until after the new year at this point. (Sigh...)

There used to be a freeper singles ping list years ago. I wonder whatever happened to it. Threads like this always bring out a lot of complaints about women. Maybe if someone brought that back, freepers could look here for like-minded individuals.

NOT ME! You make a ping list! I wouldn’t want the responsibility for relationships gone wrong. But I agree that it’s sad that we get so many stories of failed possibilities. The women I’ve met on FR seem absolutely fantastic and men would be darned lucky to have a chance at them.

They don't sound very available emotionally to me.

You do bring up a good point. Seems like many of us women are at either extreme -- either struggling financially or doing well but intensely focused on careers and as hell-bent on success as our male counterparts. Very few are in jobs that pay decently but are not so demanding as to take time and attention away from dating and marriage.

Wish I could've said it that succinctly.

Note I stayed away from the "even at this age, women really don't want the "nice guys" despite saying so, they still want the bad boys because they're more exciting" argument, even though that's also 100% true. Some things never do change, do they?
