On this date in 1865 Occupation forces take steps to insure their political control over the region. Patriots are denied the voting franchise while their former servants are handed authority to insure the party of the occupation forces continues to maintain it's grip on the region. Efforts are made to secure spoils and valuables to enrich the armies of the aggressors, as well as their political masters and controllers.
Thus begins a time of great suffering and starvation from which nearly 2 million of the occupied people will not survive. Swarms of officials are sent to oversee the exploitation of this newly conquered area while propaganda agents busily paint the activity as altruistic and in the best interest of the people.

I knew this would get us started again. All I inherited was my GF’s broken and smashed pocket watch. My oldest brother got my GM’s 25 cal. pistol that she carried into the fields for protection. My great grandfather was sergeant, then brevet captain in the Alabama infantry. His family became sharecroppers picking cotton.

losing a war can be hell. So can being robbed, which in this case is pretty much what happened.

The “Lost Cause” was federalism. It only lasted for “four score and seven years.”

All the ugly truths about what was done and why have been covered up. New York won that war. It still controls the rest of the nation to this day.

One of my grandfather’s relatives rode with McNeill’s raiders when they crossed the Potomac and captured General Crook. I have the Whitney Dragoon sidearm which he supposedly took off General Crook.

And how many Democrats voted for this amendment? I believe it was zero. In the House? Four Democrats voted for it in June 1864 when it failed. Sixteen voted for it in January 1865 when it finally passed. In the Senate one Democrat voted for it, six voted against, and three abstained when it was approved in April 1864.
