Fourteen peacekeepers were killed and 53 others were injured in the Thursday evening attack, the UN's peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) said in a statement. Mission officials believe the attack was carried out by the rebel group Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), according to the statement. At least five members of Congo's armed forces also were slain, Guterres said.

"Attacks against those who are working in the service of peace and stability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are cowardly and constitute serious violations," said Maman Sidikou, the secretary general's special representative in the DRC, who leads its mission there. "MONUSCO will take all actions to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable and brought to justice."

The attack took place in the eastern province of North Kivu, which borders Rwanda and Uganda, Guterres said.

But, but we were assured that when the Belgians left the Congo peach and harmony would take it’s place and Central Africa would be wrapped in sweet bliss. That was around 1960. What happened?

The Belgians did a poor job of colonizing. Some of them went native, even to the point of joining in ritual cannibalism.

Overall, lousy administrators compared with the British and Dutch, or even the French.

Not so sure here.
U.N. “peacekeepers” in Africa are known for raping and looting.
Blue helmets come around here they will NOT be welcomed.
Usually third worlders working for cheep for the U.N.to support their families in some crap hole.

Can an act committed while peace is being kept be a crime of war?

Thomas Pakenham, author of The Scramble for Africa is descended from Edward Pakenham, who, for some strange reason, is especially remembered down in New Orleans.

A real hellhole, regardless of the money thrown at the problem, most of which goes into the pockets of corrupt rulers.

And when fighting breaks out in earnest between real soldiers and/or guerrillas, the Blue Helmets usually run for the tall grass.

Early on in Operation Restore Hope in Somalia (started by Poppy Bush, but presided over by Clinton) there was a reluctance on the part of Clinton/Aspin’s DOD to declare Somalia a combat zone. Initially, soldiers assigned there were not authorized to wear combat patches and infantry soldiers there were not awarded CIBs, even though soldiers were getting shot at and blown up by mines. That changed after Blackhawk down. There was no hiding it anymore, and Bubba Clinton even got to show how pro-military he was by passing out two MOHs to the families of soldiers who were killed due to the administration’s ineptitude.

Peacekeepers.

An odd term for wusses in army gear who passively watch carnage from a safe distance.
