Long forgotten flags captured by U.S. forces during an obscure 19th-century military action in Korea were uncovered during restoration work at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis last week. The well-preserved flags were rediscovered in the academys Mahan Hall when British ensigns seized as trophies during the War of 1812 were removed from their display cases.

“In 1866, the American merchant ship USS General Sherman sailed to Pyongyang in attempt to open Korea for trade. The Koreans suspected that the true mission of the General Sherman was to loot their temples so they set the ship on fire and massacred the crew....
“In 1871, a U.S. expedition of five warships approached the Korean coast to establish diplomatic relations and inquire about the fate of the General Sherman. After the Koreans fired on the ships, the Americans launched an assault in which U.S Marines captured several coastal forts and removed the flags.”
I think it’s time for us to park a couple of those big, beautiful “boomers” off the Korean coast and make that fat psychopath an offer he can’t refuse.
“boomers”
‘Boomers’ are not meant to be seen or heard.
Interesting. Good to know. Amazing what little tidbits can be found to weave a true story about our country, others, and how people/nations behave.
(But the editing could’ve been better. Seems as if no one proof-read this.)
Based on the headline, this sounds like another West Point “communism will win” story at the Naval Academy.
Well, it’s a bit presumptuous to say it HAS links to the Kims. When one reads the article, it states that NK tells the tale that their ancestor arranged the attack, but yet evidence does not actually point that way. IOW, MAY have links if NK stories are true!
But no, I don’t think this is a “commies win” story.
Ship captured in ‘68 by NK? Wow, that’s not even war-time for them, right? I guess it was “illegal”!
Fascinating bits of history here!
Shouldnt they be called Flashers then?
“Shouldnt they be called Flashers then?”

A couple of years ago, we hosted a South Korean officer and his family at my home for dinner. Sometime later in the evening, I discussed my career in the Marines and noticed some change in attitude with my guest.
He described this - for us obscure - action In 1871 in Korea by the Marines and discovered that according to him, all Koreans still resent our landing and defeat of their forts.
Talk about holding a grudge!
Dont tell me we have to give them back like what obamatard did with the Philippines..
That’s why me and mg GF vet all our guests and can easily spot the leftard who is bound to ruin the dinner. Those are the ones we dont invite unless it’s a bring-along guest of a guest which annoys me.
Being an old Army guy myself I could be wrong but it's my understanding that they're meant to be "heard" if the Commander-In-Chief gives a particular order....an order issued only twice in this country's history.
Twice so far at least!
Do you know what a boomer is?
A boomer is a nuclear muscle sub.
