The Best Christmas Songs
Architect of Avalon ^ | Christmas Eve | Architect of Avalon

First, what are your favorite Christmas songs?

I would name Silver Bells, Do You Hear What I Hear, and White Christmas by Bing Crosby, Holly Jolly Christmas by Burl Ives, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel by Enya, Frosty the Snowman, and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

Second, what are some hymns, and other pieces of Christian music, that resonate at Christmas?

Star of the East--The Trinity Choir (1923)

Star of the East, oh Bethlehem's star,
Guiding us on to heaven afar.
Sorrow and grief and lulled by thy light
Thou hope of each mortal, in death's lonely night

Fearless and tranquil, we look up to thee
Knowing thou beam'st through eternity.
Help us to follow where thou still dost guide
Pilgrims of earth so wise.

Oh star that leads to God above,
Whose rays are peace and joy and love.
Watch o'er us still till life hath ceased.
Beam on, bright star, sweet Bethlehem star

Star of the East, thou hope of the soul
While round us here the dark billows roll
Lead us from sin to glory afar
Thou star of the East, thou sweet Bethlehem's star

--Amanda Kennedy, 1918

Silent Night, for me. Transcendent. Heh, of course I learned it at a young age, so maybe it’s transcendent for me personally. I think that’s allowed.

One of my favorites is "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day"--but only if it is sung to the tune "Waltham"--other tunes are also used--and only if all seven verses are sung. Otherwise, it's just another Christmas ditty.

You can hear a version with all the verses, accompanied by a good video by clicking here.

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day (all the verses)

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head;
“There is no peace on earth,” I said:
“For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!”

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
“God is not dead; nor doth he sleep!
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men!”

Nothing transcends personal experience, even the experiences of a child. Those often leave an imprint on the soul.
