I was never much of a waterfowl hunter, and preferred upland birds, but I was talked into goose hunting one time. The 4 man party got our limit and then no one wanted their birds so I took them. Their a pain in the butt to clean and had a mild liver flavor to them. But I made a lot of goose meat stew with them instead of throwing them out.

I'm not sure why there are so many today that they are a pest. That DDT and the “Silent Spring” crap about the eggs is proven BS - so I'm guessing it has to do with generally better environmental conditions, increased protection of habitat, perhaps fewer people out hunting them - although I would guess with their huge populations, more geese are killed every year now than they were in the 60’s and 70’s.
I think the increased populations have gone on for too long to be cyclical. Grouse and rabbit have population cycles of about 6 years iirc. (1976 high, 1979 low, 1982 high again, etc.).
No more than dogs do. That said, they are rather abundant, though dog is a much meatier animal.
I’m surprised they still have a limit on them- it should be lifted until their population starts to decline again.
We have a pond here at my office park. A few years back we had 200+ Canadian geese and ducks in this 1-2 acre pond. The ladies that worked in the grocery store bakery across the street would feed them day old bread everyday @ 4pm. One winter the geese did not migrate because they were being fed here in NH.
At night they would come over and sleep on the paved parking lot because it was warm. We all learned to look down before you stepped out of your automobile in the morning. Walking across the parking lot was like crossing a minefield.
Eventually enough of the business owners complained and the ladies stomped feeding the water fowl. Now, we have fake coyotes and other predator statues around the pond. We even have a recorded sound of some predator. Plus they added two fountains to deter the birds from landing.
If you've never tried cooked goose you should. One time will do the trick and remove all doubts. I'm not a fan myself.
Gee, nice haul of geese too... I assume no one exceeded any limits, not being a goose hunter myself I wouldn't know.
Sometimes guys will donate game meat to orphanages, homeless shelters, etc, so one would assume that none of those geese are going to waste.

There are great numbers that are true migratory geese from Canada who were born there and migrate south.
Unfortunately, there are now millions that were born in northern states such as here in Michigan that don't have that migratory instinct and instead, spend the winters here and continue to breed throughout the spring and summer.
The state could hold an open season on the geese but there is no way they can be safely shot in all the human habitable ares where they now thrive in safety........
The only logical solution is for the DNR to establish a task force whose sole purpose is to track down every pond in every subdivision and golf course and destroy all the spring time nesting sites of these vermin..........
LOL! The condo sub next to mine which borders a water shed stream has a couple of those fake coyote silhouettes and the geese either don't know what a coyote is or could care less about the silhouettes..........
The Sterling Heights stamping plant in Sterling Hgts also has several of those coyotes on their front lawn along Van Dyke and the geese just ignore them.........
I so love GOD and I sure do like hunting with dogs.. think some of the best hunting dogs in the USA live with us

Those damn geese are a dime a dozen now.
I think we have geese year-round (chasing away the mallards that USED to be ubiquitous) because of those damn “sediment ponds” set up EVERYWHERE when new houses are built.
Housing explosion -> sediment ponds -> Canada geese -> no mallards
Not to mention increase in mosquitoes.
Damn environmentals. They plug one hole to open another.
Our family friend has the same rules with his kids. the rule is “never post pictures of daddy and mommy”. Supposedly, the guy is military and the mother is a criminal attorney.
That old herding canard ain’t working.
That’s been tried for years around here at various venues, including my husband’s work campus.
One year he came back from Xmas vaca finding all the big flocks disappeared.
The namby-pamby liberals running his campus finally gave up on all the “nice” stuff including the BC thing and shot them. They did send them to homeless shelters and so on.
However, geese are very populous here so they still aren’t really containing them, and keep trying “nice” methods. Latest is German Shepherd silohuettes by the pond. LOL. How dumb do they think these animals are?
