Texas-El Paso, Missouri, Baylor and North Texas came calling, but once they took a look at him in person, all said, "No thanks." He received one scholarship offer, from Houston. There, in Kliff Kingsbury's spread offense, all he did was throw for more yards and touchdowns than any player in NCAA Division I history.
The Texans cut him that fall and re-signed him to their practice squad, where he spent the whole 2012 season. It would be the first of three times he was cut. He also has been traded, for a seventh-round pick.
Through offseason workouts and training camp, the Vikings weren't sure whether Keenum would beat out fellow backup Taylor Heinicke. As Keenum was throwing interceptions in camp, it became fair to wonder if he would be any different in his fifth pro offense than he was in his first four. Even after Keenum had a decent preseason, no one felt confident in his ability to win games if he had to play..
The more Keenum played, the more comfortable he seemed, and the more Shurmur learned how to use him.
"What we try to do is do what our players do well," Shurmur says. "So we tailor things to his strengths. He can move around a little bit, get the ball out quickly, do some play-action stuff. He rewards us by making good decisions. If it's not there, he checks it down."
Odds are that Shurmur will be the next head coach of the Cardinals.
And, he’ll be taking Kenum with him.
If he was a professed Christian who talked about prayer and said he would remain a virgin until marriage hed be out of the league.
Sometimes the NFL, with all of its scouting and talent evaluation, still manages to overlook a great talent who somehow finds an opportunity - Kurt Warner was one instance of this. Maybe Case Keenum is another - he’s had a fine season and he’s now gotten the Vikings to the conference championship game.
It’s always safer to go with ‘Prototypes’. I have always preferred ‘winners’, those with a tough makeup that won’t quit. Those are the kind that can lead or come from behind. When I played as a younger man I believed I could beat anyone at any game if we could only play long enough.
Give me winners every time, they lose with grace, but never lose the will to win. Tim Tebow was one of these, the Lord uses him in unique ways, but had he had a coach unafraid to use his strengths he would have been fun to watch.
Always dreamed of platooning him with Michael Vick. Alternate series, rolling out every play with run/pass options ( one right handed, one left) throwing the ball away or stepping out to avoid big hits. These guys would have run the legs off of every defense ever seen and be unstoppable.
Would like to see him play baseball if he is ever close to Little Rock.
Sometimes the NFL misses talent? Try often....and usually white guys. Keenum’s #1 receiver and Pro bowler Adam Theilan was undrafted too. When asked what he was told were some of the reasons from scouts why he went undrafted, he said none. No one talked to me.
The ultimate “miss” was Tom Brady, who wasn’t even a starter for most of his tenure at Michigan, and was selected with pick #199, a compensatory pick, in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft.
I get what you are saying in regards to Tebow because I agree he was thrown under the bus due in part because if his faith in Christ. However, Keenum is a devout Christian, too.
Is is good but his defense is in the top 5 and that has made a difference, look at the jaguars, bortoles is a horrible qb but his defense keeps him in games.
I don’t know if the Vikings will let him go, unless they want to go back to the one that got hurt 2 years ago.
All I can say about the Vikings is ...........................
GO PACKERS!!!!!!
Problem in Houston was there was no pass protection or running game. Multiple OCs and Head Coaches didn’t help, either.
Brady was behind Brian Griese most of the time at Michigan.
Coach B picked Brady because he was the best player available at that point in the 6th round. He didn’t need a QB and had no inkling of how good Brady would be.
Coach B did trade up from the seventh round because he said sometimes you get a good player in the sixth but almost never in the seventh. I guess he was right.
And Brady’s played with that chip on his shoulder his entire career, and that chip is still there.
I am sure that there arent many people that thought either of the 2 remaining NFC quarterbacks (either Keenum or Nick Foles) would be a Super Bowl starter at the beginning of the year.
It would have been interesting if the Saints played New England in the SB. To think that Drew Brees at 39, would have been the younger of the two starting QBs.
Trivia time - who is/was the oldest player to be on a Super Bowl winning team? If you know this, without a search, Ill be impressed.
As a Broncos fan I watched Tebow lead the team to the playoffs despite the fact that the offensive line leaked like a sieve and sometimes seemed to intentionally let tacklers past them.
Has to be a kicker or a punter, I know that.
Did he play for the Giants?
