Thousands of 'Vikings' took to the streets brandishing burning torches and axes as the ancient Up Helly Aa festival got under way on the Shetland Islands. The event, a celebration of the Scottish island's Norse heritage, drew massive crowds with many 'warriors' wearing winged helmets and sheepskins.

I’ll see that my Sheltie gets a green beer to celebrate.
I will believe they are “young vikings” when they start doing the Viking thing to their invaders.
....sounds like central LA
When I first saw the article, I had hoped that was exactly what it meant. Naturally, I was disappointed. 👎
No blood eagles?
UpHelly ping!
Meanwhile, in real-life, Scandinavia is being overrun and sacked by the Mussulmen.
Dhimmi status can be fun!
Yup, I watched the entire event on the big TV. It was great and the commentary from Tom Morton was wonderful.
Interesting fact I learned. UHAa began as a part of a temperance movement with no booze until later. Even today the booze is restricted to rooms off the main halls.
After it was over mrs p6 and I enjoyed a Zataran jambalaya dinner. I did have a few beers however...LOL!
My family always said our roots were in Scotland—albeit 400 years ago. My sister did one of those DNA test things and she was “shocked” that a good chunk of our background was Northern European/Scandinavian. Add to that 15% Italian.
I told her that would not be a shock if she remembered her history: Our ancestors got raped by only the Best Invaders: The Vikings and the Romans.
If we tried to do something like that in The States...it would end up like FinnFest in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. No axes, burning torches or longboats, just great food and the World’s largest Sauna...
The British crime drama Shetland shows the festival. It’s a good series.
As one with Norman blood on both sides of my family, this sounds interesting.

Finn fest? UffDa!

I had to work during the whole event, but, attending Up Helly Aa is on my list.
How so? Not too many Vikings anywhere in LA.
