The Pico Rivera City Council is demanding the resignation of one of its own members after he was caught on video delivering an anti-military rant in a classroom that has garnered national attention.
The vote came after dozens of veterans and community members blasted City Councilman Gregory Salcido and called for his resignation for the video in which he criticized the intelligence of those who join the military.

"My goal as it relates to my students as it relates to the military is to get them to do everything to get to college. It's not just the military. I don't want them working at a fast-food restaurant either," he said. "I don't think it's a revelation to anybody that those who aren't stellar students usually find the military a better option. That's as plain as it's Tuesday night. That's not a criticism of anybody."

From what I understand they can demand all they want, but they have no power to remove him.
They are going to Gray Davis him out of office.
Salcido is a liar, he criticized many with his ridiculous statement:

They're not high-level thinkers. They're not academic people. They're not intellectual people. They're the freaking lowest of our low."
I watched the hearing last night. He actually tried to make himself the victim......being threatened, taken out of context....blah, blah, blah. There were many hispanic Vets who gave him and earful including the Mayor, a hispanic who wants him out.
If he doesn’t resign, he will be censured and will have no active part on the council, stripped of any committees and voting rights. He’s done. He’s a real jerk.
They can ostracize him and render him ineffective, though. And then the next election cycle would probably take care of the rest.

I met a Naval Academy graduate who graduated from medical school shortly after graduating from Annapolis. He was a naval medical officer at Special Warfare Command. Another “loser” who joined the military because he could not do anything else, according to Salcido.
He’s a teacher, can’t be fired. He’s an elected official, can’t be fired.
Interesting that El Rancho High School made the national news. My father taught music at “the Ranch” in the 1950’s and my mother taught English there in the 1960’s-1980’s. I also substitute taught there in the ‘70’s.
In just what context would his words have been acceptable? I certainly can’t envision one.
I was ostracized my last two months of high school in 1972. My crime was that I was awarded an Army ROTC 4 year scholarship, to any university in the country that had ROTC.
I even had teachers say to my face how "disappointed" they were in me. Only one teacher was thrilled for me, my calculus teacher who was a former Jesuit priest at Marquette. He enthusiastically supported my decision to matriculate at Gonzaga, one of the best decisions I ever made.
This "loser" won the most valuable scholarship in his over 500 graduating class. Mine paid all expenses, plus a stipend each month. I graduated with zero debt, and my parents didn't have to pay a dime of my college expense.
I've never been back to any reunion...I had no reason to, nor any desire to reconnect with anyone, with the possible exception of a former girlfriend. After 45+ years, there's really no point in doing so.

Parents complained about Mr. Salcido before for being rude towards students...Yet, the school district did not fire the guy...
It is possible for a teacher to express his negative views about military without insulting a student’s relative...Here Salcido called a student’s uncle stupid...
I think he is on leave from his teaching job...I don’t see anything wrong with a district firing a teacher who has a tough time controlling his emotions...Salcido clearly has a tough time controlling his emotions...
I don’t think a guy like Salcido would be employed by a wealthy school district, like Beverly Hills...It’s unlikely that Beverly Hills would tolerate some teacher who is frequently rude to his students...
Pico Rivera is not some wealthy area...Many parents, in that area, are too busy working...They do not have time to get too involved with their kids’ schools...Maybe that is why Salcido got away with being rude to the students...The administration did not worry too much about parent complaints...This time...Who knows?
It is up to voters to kick Salcido out of office...I don’t think he is resigning...

I drove through Pico Rivera many times...One of my co-workers lived in Pico Rivera...He is a white guy...I was surprised that he lived in Pico Rivera, where most residents are Hispanic...He told me that house was cheaper in Pico Rivera, compared to surrounding cities...
I agree, and am also familiar with the area.
Mrs. jaz went to El Rancho High her freshman year in the ‘50s and we lived in the San Gabriel valley for many years before moving north, we still have a few relatives and friends there.
I know he wouldn’t have come off like that then or he’d have been shown the door pronto. I have a hunch there are many veterans there as well as many family members of vets. I believe with the uproar he’s caused there’s a fair chance they’ll recall the turkey or at least vote him out when he’s up for reelection, I sure hope so anyway.
I did not say they were acceptable.
Sorry, I wasn’t saying that you had. Many people try to defend morons like this as having been “taken out of context” when there’s no context in which the statements could be taken in any benign way.
