The United States has won at least 25 Winter Olympic medals at each of the last four Games. With one week to go in Pyeongchang, the Americans have visited the podium just 10 times and are on pace to post their lowest medal count at Winter Games since 1998.
After winning 13 medals each at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics and 1998 Nagano Olympics, Team USA medal totals at Olympic Winter Games increased exponentially. First, it was 34 trips to the podium in 2002 at Salt Lake City. Then, 25 medals at Turin in 2006. A record 37 Winter Olympic medals followed at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and 28 more in Sochi four years later.
Have the American athletes performed below expectations? Or have they not had the opportunity to medal yet?
The answer is a little bit of both.

I think our country can afford to be a little more invested yes. Its a good morale booster and unifier to rally behind our athletes. Think 1980 Lake Placid miracle in ice hockey and gorgeous gold medal finishes from some of our female figure skaters.
Not suggesting grotesque, communist level “win at all costs” mentality though. Of course not.
Its fine when athletes repping foreign countries train in the U.S. but it irks me when they play for countries that are so hostile to us. The IOC in general is rather biased against America.
We can #MAGA and #AmericaFirst in winter sports too!
And I quite like the diversity of the American team in both summer and winter games. 1996 Atlanta “Magnificent 7” gymnastics team case in point. Literally every race represented. Legends. All of them.
I saw him - do they need a linebacker to push the bob? Doubt it, but he ticked a couple boxes, apparently.
The event coverage is awful. Literally spent 25 mins and saw one skater perform, switched to MMA for action.
Like the NFL, the Olympic athletes, staff, and media have lost focus on the sports. They put energy into making it about politics, social justice, racial rather athletic performances.
How quickly they traded their "moment" to shine for demeaning comments about others. Long after these would be stars are forgotton, we will remember we Mr. Trump!
I always cringe when the US marches in the opening ceremonies, they always act like a bunch of dufuses, exemplifying the “Ugly American”.
Canada is beating the USA too..i get canadian tv...they are loving this....they worry about that more than anything.
Canada has gotten more golds than the US in the last two Winter Olympics.
I am not as fatalistic about national unity. Maybe the hyper PC coverage of NBC is to blame for over-emphasizing gay tokenism and political statements.
There are a lot of lovely athletes who make no political commentary that could barely afford new skates and plane tickets for themselves or their families. Don’t know what the solution is...but it’d just be nice to have talented people encouraged to reach their potential without being so strapped for resources.
And to add insult to injury, the super-troll @GoldenKnights twitter account held an anti-Montreal Twitter poll. It asked if the 1994 MLB season did not end prematurely because of the strike, which team would have won the World Series. The obvious answer was the untouchable 1994 Montreal Expos. But @GoldenKnights deliberately left out the Expos as a choice in the poll.
Based on the clueless respsones to the poll by hundreds of Canadiens fans, they had no clue that an American team (via its official twitter account) just dissed them.
At least Vegas is trying to even out the lopsided advantage that Canada is exhibiting over US this winter. :)
The liberal media overhyped a U.S. team that was, in all actuality, not all it was cracked up to be.
After watching the Swedes and Finns duke it out on Sunday I really don’t see the US Men’s Hockey Team getting a medal. It’ll be Swedes, Finns, Russians in some order.
Hey.
We have a conservative government (including my own progress party) atm and just saw our Prime Minister who is at the olympics being interviewed by CNN.
Our PM broke script and warned not to take any of these North Korean charm offensives seriously and that the little dictator needs to be dealt with.
And, yes?
2 more golds today.
I think this olympics we will beat the US world record single winter olympic medal haul. Hope I didn’t just jinx us just there.
GOAT? That we have always been and noone is even close. Not America, Not the Soviet Union, Not the East Germans.....
A nation of 5 million taking on the entire world and smacking them around in the snow. Except Hockey :p
So when people ask why Norway is not like Finland or Sweden in hockey? I tell them to look at the Olympic medal table. Our best athletes are channeled into different sports.
Btw, men’s figureskating should be banned. I accidently ended up watching the fairy Trump basher.
‘
Trump should institute a travel ban for male figure skaters including the Americans.
That sort of thing? Should not be tolerated.
Cheers.
Are you from Norway?
Shall we talk about the Summer Olympics? LOL!
I think Norway has three times as many Winter medals as they do Summer medals, historically.
The US, the ration is something like 10-1 in favor of Summer medals.
The US has as much of a chance of catching Norway, as Porto has of catching Liverpool in the Second Leg.
Olympics are a bust. Used to love them. Haven’t watched in years.
Sick of the perverts and politics.
Yes.
And, I just came over this story now in a Norwegian newspaper, about some snowborder who failed the USA utterly. Came almost last I think.
But, he is super happy because the tv cameras showed him kissing his boyfriend and that was worth more than gold.
You can rag on Europe or Norway, but I have zero idea about any of our athletes politics or sexual orientation.
America seems to be in a class of its own when it comes to crazy identity politics, and thankfully Norway seems to be somewhat resistant to this virus compared to neighbours like Sweden.
Identity politics will tear your nation apart (It can be argued it already has), and I can bet it also has not helped US team spirit in the Olympics either. Imagine being a “normal” athlete in that lot, and being interviewed and followed by “American” journalists who are really only propaganda tools for Soros.
Good luck for the rest of the games.
I hope you take both the hockey golds.
Identity politics has torn our country apart, and one and only one party is to blame—the vile Democrat party, led by disgusting politicians like Barack Hussein Obama and Hillary Clinton.
