On Thursday, the Colorado State athletic department officials announced they want to interview Becky Hammon for their men's basketball head-coaching job.
The 40-year-old Hammon, a former WNBA star, played college basketball at Colorado State. She's currently an assistant coach for the NBA's San Antonio Spurs.
She became the first full-time female assistant coach in the NBA in 2014. Some NBA observers believe San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich is grooming her to be his replacement when he retires.
In terms of Hammon's ability to control boys and young men once they get on campus and develop them into a successful unit, Hammon already has proved herself in that area. She has been put on the hot seat with the Spurs and has been asked to be the head coach for some summer-league games in past seasons.
Apparently she has received positive reviews from Spurs players for her coaching techniques and leadership.
Colorado State officials worry that even though Hammon is an alum, luring her away from the NBA will be a challenge.

Why does this matter? there is no “male/female!” There is a long spectrum of genders, and anyone can move effortlessly from one to another, so there is no “first female” anything.

Just being logical, based on official leftist principles currently being taught in colleges.
I guess it all depends on whether male players will actually take direction from her.
The jury is still out on that one I feel.
She’s a Rapid City, SD girl. Mt daughter-in-law played on the same team at Stephens High.
She’s probably qualified, to have been recommended.
However, it’s a risk to hire any woman for such a job in this #MeToo era. I would advise against it. Now that the consideration is public, it would be hard not to give her the job anyway.
The college probably watched Wildcats with Goldie Hawn and thought that maybe it will work in real life, this time in hoops...
The college athletes she’d be coaching are not only males, but horribly spoiled and pampered. It is difficult in this day and age for ANY coach to get them into line and keep them there. They routinely get their coaches fired by quitting on them. If they decided they did not like her this could get ugly.
Is she really a Russian citizen?
Yup. And the MeToo’ movement will make it hard for the players and school to fire her out of pc..
She became a citizen to play for Russia when the US Olympics team rejected her. She helped lead Russia to a Bronze medal.
good for her.
is she black? Maybe we can get that out of the way too.
if she is qualified and can do the job I couldn’t care less about her genetic makeup.
By the way, I have no use whatsoever for the NBA.
Saw her pic. Not bad looking at all. Don’t you think that has a lot to do with it? That female NFL ref is a blond 40-something. No way the powers that be gonna ‘promos’ their cause with anything less.
Affirmative action. More fans(housewives) to raise their eyebrows. Try firing them when they don’t measure up.
Like Obama in 12’.
Or rather can she recruit?
Is she willing to pay a player 10 grand, or introduce him to some of the Colorado St. Coeds during a recruiting trip.
You gotta get down and dirty if you want to recruit today’s 18 year olds.
No thanks.
She was born and raised in the US, but got Russian citizenship, after the US rejected her for the 2008 Olympics. She helped lead that team to a bronze, IIRC.
Athletics is one of the few places in academia where merit trumps identity - the won/loss record doesn’t lie. If they make her head coach, and she does better than her predecessors, good for her; if she doesn’t, eventually she’ll be replaced (probably with some hesitation, because that’s when all the identity politics baggage will come into play).
I have no issue with her credentials. I do, however, take umbrage at characterizing anyone ever in the WNBA as a “star”.
