Readers' Poll: The 10 Worst Songs of the 1980s
rolling stone ^ | 10/6/2011 | Andy Greene

A few weeks ago we asked our readers to vote for their least favorite songs from the 1990s, so it was the obvious next move to dial it back 10 years and see what you guys hated in the 1980s. The results are sure to infuriate a lot of people. For the record, I personally disagree with most of these selections. In fact, I love a lot of these songs...

10. Rick Astley - 'Never Gonna Give You Up'...

9. Taco - 'Puttin' On The Ritz'...

8. Toni Basil - 'Mickey'...

7. Bobby McFerrin - 'Don't Worry Be Happy'...

6. Falco - 'Rock Me Amadeus'...

5. Men Without Hats - 'The Safety Dance'...

4. Wham! - 'Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go)'....

3. Chris de Burgh - 'Lady In Red'....

2. Europe - 'The Final Countdown'...

1. Starship - 'We Built This City'...

I’m shocked anyone could have possibly thought that George Michael was straight after that one.

>>Sorry, that song was released in Sept 1979.<<

It was so bad it transcends mere time.

:)

note: AND THEY KEEP PLAYING IT!!!

As far as the song in question goes, I prefer the version on the “Saints And Sinners” album, with the late Jon Lord on the organ.

Agreed. Thank God my ‘80s weren’t ruined by videos. Frankly MTV died because the idea of filming music stinks. People finally realized they didn’t want to have to look at a screen, or have their vision of a song forever ruined.

Luckily I was either deployed or underway 95% of that decade. Lots of BAD music I remember ignoring it as soon as I heard. To this day I turn that crap off and dig into my vinyl pile. There is always something worth listening to on vinyl.

Loved that song. By the way, the name "Dexy's Midnight runners" means drug addicts on Dextroamphetamine (meth) looking to score in the middle of the night.

I don't know if they really were, but they made a great one hit wonder.

I think there’s a difference between “bad” and “overplayed.”

Agreed.

Plenty of good songs were ruined by playing them over and over and over and...

Back in the day I asked a DJ why in the name of Pete stations do that. He told me the owners make them.

Yes, that was a stupid song. So was “I think I’m turning Japanese.”

That is true for about 1/2 that list.

“The song itself isn’t that bad. It isn’t that good but it certainly isn’t the “worst.””

I never got the hate for this song. Cheesy 80s sound, yes. Textbook pop hit, yes. Perfect for radio ... yes.

Something I’d search through a pile of albums/cassettes/CDs/directory of poorly named MP3s to dig up and play? Hell no! That’s true of a lot of pop hits though :-).

I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO HATED THIS! MY BROTHER FROM ANOTHER MOTHER (OR POSSIBLY SISTER). THIS IS WHEN I BASICALLY GAVE UP ON POPULAR MUSIC - AND HOW MTV L O V E D THIS ONE! BARFFF!

I would like to nominate “Walk This Way” by Run DMC and that big mouth guy that dresses like a loose woman.

Truly awful, and signaled the beginning of the end of everything good
