China will ban people with poor ‘social credit’ from planes and trains

Starting in May, Chinese citizens who rank low on the country’s burgeoning “social credit” system will be in danger of being banned from buying plane or train tickets for up to a year, according to statements recently released by the country’s National Development and Reform Commission.

With the social credit system, the Chinese government rates citizens based on things like criminal behavior and financial misdeeds, but also on what they buy, say, and do. Those with low “scores” have to deal with penalties and restrictions. China has been working towards rolling out a full version of the system by 2020, but some early versions of it are already in place.

Previously, the Chinese government had focused on restricting the travel of people with massive amounts of debt, like LeEco and Faraday Future founder Jia Yueting, who made the Supreme People’s Court blacklist late last year.

The new travel restrictions are the latest addition to this growing patchwork of social engineering, which has already imposed punishments on more than seven million citizens. And there’s a broad range when it comes to who can be flagged. Citizens who have spread “false information about terrorism,” caused “trouble” on flights, used expired tickets, or were caught smoking on trains could all be banned, according to Reuters.

But the system, as it stands, is opaque; citizens are seemingly just as likely to be flagged for minor infractions like leaving bikes parked in a footpath or issuing apologies that are deemed “insincere” as major credit defaulters like Jia. And it’s often unclear whether they’re on a blacklist in the first place, let alone what kind of recourse is available. “Chinese government authorities clearly hope to create a reality in which bureaucratic pettiness could significantly limit people’s rights,” Maya Wang said...

In China, just using the Internet to read things is a crime.

China has come a long way over the past 25 years, but they are still communists.

I read Rummel’s Death By Government when it was first published. Changed my outlook on government completely.

I just finished reading it recently. I think we had all heard of the 'Black Book of Communism', and the slaughters of the 20th Century, but 'Death By Government' really paints a very sickening picture of many countries and nationalities that took Government control to a brutal extreme. Obviously Hitler's Germany, Stalin's Soviet Union, and Mao's PRC, were prominent - but this sickness knows no boundaries. Cambodia, Vietnam, Korea, Mexico, Yugoslavia, Eastern Europe reciprocating on innocent Germans, Bangladesh, etc ...
A depressing, but eye opening read.
Like you said - it really sharpens one's view of Government. Our Founding Father's had it right in wanting to keep Government small and limited - however Governments tend to grow. And they tend to find/invent internal enemies that need to be squashed.

Typical of commies, socialists, national socialists, liberals, et al. In the Soviet Union one could not travel outside of their county without the proper ‘papers’ and they did not issue these ‘papers’ to a huge percentage of the populace. Liberal Creepozoids today druel at the dream of having this type of system for all us deplorables who cling to our Christianity and guns.

First the government gathers the information. It doesn’t say why. The folks are too stupid to understand why. Then the government uses the information the way they had planned. Almost nobody realizes what happened.

The government does not exist to give us freedom, but to take it away.

I’m sure you’ve also heard about the hundreds (over 400) of American universities with Chinese funded “curriculum “ under the felicitous guise of ‘cultural awareness ‘. Buildings, staff, credit, unquestioning support from the university management etc. ALL PROPAGANDA

The same is coming here when the Dems take power again........

Which, sadly, is inevitable in 2024 - the pendulum always swings back, and with a vengeance.

After all, that’s why Trump is in office right now - a reaction against the crimes of Obama........

Only after a Dem victory in 2024, they will take such dictatorial powers, there will likely be no recovery from them - short of civil war............

I think there is a huge opportunity at the moment, for the GOP.

Trump, please consider this. I think the way to turn things around, is to start to groom the future of the GOP now.

My nomination, as Vice President for your next term:

(not joking, in the least)
