So what may have set him off in the moment was receiving the "summons" (if he imagined he might be arrested or in trouble)!??! He was a ready bomb, and the "summons" may well have ignited the fuse.

While there are bigger picture issues at play, we should all take a moment to honor the memory of this man, for whom the issue boiled down in a single moment to what he saw as his duty and his obvious desire to save the life of another.
